This is a time of real opportunity for pharmacy education in North Wales and we are looking for an exceptional individual to lead on the development and delivery of the curriculum in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice. As a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy Practice, you will be an academic pharmacist with a higher degree, extensive experience in pharmacy education, a track record of research or scholarly activity in a relevant area and will be (or have recently been) practicing as a senior pharmacists within a healthcare setting (continued NHS work will be re-charged). You will provide outstanding academic leadership to shape Bangor’s MPharm curriculum and deliver the pharmacy degree. You will work collaboratively with partners including the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Health Education and Improvement Wales.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as practical. The post is full-time and permanent, and is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service check.

This role will be located at our Bangor campus. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

School of Medical and Health Sciences

The School of Medical and Health Sciences is the focus for medical, health and care education and research at Bangor University. The school comprises of over 200 staff, delivering to more than 1300 students with a portfolio of programmes that continues to expand. These include the University’s Welsh Government-backed flagship plans for a North Wales Medical School at Bangor University from 2024, Pharmacy degree from 2025, and the newly created BSc in Pharmacology from 2023. The School’s research centres, organised within the Bangor Institute for Medical and Health Research (BIHMR), span primary care, clinical trials, health economics and medicines evaluation, ageing and dementia, public health and cancer biology.


Purpose of the Job

  • To lead on the development of a curriculum in clinical pharmacy, meeting GPhC accreditation standards, and in line with the University’s vision for pharmacy education.
  • To participate in the delivery of teaching, supervision and placement of pharmacy students with particular emphasis on enhancing overall student experience.
  • To undertake School and College leadership roles, as required.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the Head of Pharmacy and Head of School of Medical and Health Sciences, the post-holder will:

 Teaching duties:

  • Lead on the development and delivery of innovative approaches to MPharm course design, teaching, learning and assessment practice.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
  • Contribute significantly to the development of new teaching materials or methodologies influencing the pedagogy of clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice within and beyond the University including the modernisation of the subject curriculum. · Participate in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. Validation Panels within the University and externally e.g. GPhC).
  • Have a key role in on-going curriculum review processes (QA1, QA2) to adapt and develop new learning domains.
  • Lead on student clinical placements, liaising with Health Education and Improvement Wales and Health Boards.
  • Significant and sustained contribution to teaching development plans, policies and activities that benefit others within the University/College/School.

 Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

  • Significant and sustained high quality contribution to academic management, planning, governance and policy formation at University, College and School level.
  • Contribute to the University’s/College’s/School’s management through undertaking key roles (e.g. Director of Teaching or Senior Tutor)
  • Significant and sustained contribution to addressing aspects of Student Experience, recruitment and retention.
  • Sustain a high profile through external roles (e.g. advisory capacity to government bodies).
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School of Medical and Health Sciences.

 

 


Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The post holder will be expected to participate, and lead as appropriate, in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

 Essential:

  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and practicing as a pharmacist
  • Be educated to PhD level or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • Have completed a minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment or hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification (or equivalent) and / or HEA Fellowship recognition

 Desirable:

  • Member or Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

 

 Experience/Knowledge

 Essential:

  • Considerable experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of track record of leading innovative teaching methodologies and supporting and developing others.
  • Experience of innovative approaches to course design, module development, learning and teaching and assessment practice.
  • Evidence of leadership of quality courses and teaching and departmental initiatives that improve teaching.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching or recognition as an authority and leader in discipline.

 

 Skills/Abilities

 Essential:

  • Ability to demonstrate innovative and exciting approaches to teaching and research
  • Demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g. VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).
  • Evidence of sustained record of influencing the teaching agenda through external networking and profile-raising.

 

Other

 Essential:

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly in English, conveying ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience

 Desirable:

  • An appreciation of the bilingual context of health and care delivery across North Wales. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
