Background

The Mersey Rivers Trust (MRT) is an environmental charity focussing on the protection and
enhancement of rivers and waterbodies in the Mersey Catchment. It operates in an area covering
Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. The Trust works with partners, local communities
and volunteers to deliver a wide range of projects including river restoration, reduction of
flood risk by Natural Flood Management techniques, river monitoring, volunteer events (eg river
clean-ups/invasive species control and citizen science), community engagement and education
events, farm advice/plans and biodiversity net gain.

Due to an internal promotion, we now have a vacancy for a project manager to joint our
Merseyside team to develop and deliver a suite of Natural Flood Management projects. The
programme of projects are split into two phases, planning and development followed by
implementation.

The role will suit an experienced and self-motivated individual with skills in project
management and finance. The ideal candidate will have a background in project management with
some experience of planning and developing environmental water-based projects.

Role Overview

The role holder will take responsibility for the initial planning and development of several
projects including project planning, preparing landowner agreements, applying for permits and
permissions and working with the Senior Project Manager to develop tender documentation. As the
project moves into the implementation phase the project manager will oversee the delivery of
projects including monitoring of on the ground delivery, contractor performance and compliance
with methodologies and project plans. There may also be the opportunity to directly deliver
projects with other MRT staff.

The role will include communication and reporting to external parties and other MRT staff
including the Senior Project Manager and Programme Manager.

The post holder will be home-based and will need to travel throughout the Mersey Basin
catchment.

Key Duties:

The main duties of the role will be to support Mersey Rivers Trust staff in the delivery of its
portfolio of projects and engagement activities in Mersey Catchment including the management of
specific projects.

The role holder will be supervised by a Senior Project Manager but will be expected to take
ownership and lead specific tasks following appropriate training/competence development.

Specific duties will include: 

  • Manage a range of environmental projects, ensuring milestones are met, budgets are adhered
    to, and successful delivery is achieved.
  • Identifying the consents and permits required for projects and ensure these are obtained so
    work can commence as planned e.g flood risk, planning permission, landowner permissions.
  • To support the Senior Project Manager in project management and reporting activities,
    including financial reporting, preparation of funding claims as well as management of
    contractors.
  • Review of all H&S requirements for projects and lead by example in prioritising H&S
    and wellbeing.
  • To help promote project messages to the public through presentations, displays, events,
    social media and general publicity.
  • To assist in the development of monitoring and evaluation systems and to document, monitor
    and evaluate all projects in line with funding requirements.
  • To attend regular internal and external meetings as required.
  • To work in a flexible manner and to undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may
    be assigned from time to time, which are commensurate with the grade of the job.
  • To travel throughout the Merseyside area and occasionally elsewhere in the Mersey River
    Basin as required.

Candidate Profile

  • Degree or other relevant qualification
  • Valid driving licence and own vehicle, insured for business use is essential.
  • Competent and confident in the use of email, Excel and Word. Experience in GIS and
    Powerpoint would be desirable, along with social media (Facebook, Twitter).
  • Experience of successful environmental project delivery working as part of a team, ideally
    in the river environment and/or in catchment management.
  • Experience in working with contractors and volunteers is desirable.
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively from home without supervision and to a high
    level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including some early mornings, some evenings and some
    weekends/bank holidays.
  • Ability to prioritise and plan activities to meet strict deadlines.
  • Reliability, good attendance and work performance.
  • Strong team working skills and able to work collaboratively with partners, contractors,
    volunteers and community groups.

General Notes

  • Travel around the Mersey Catchment will be necessary and therefore a current driving
    licence and access to an appropriately insured vehicle is essential.
  • This position will from time to time require work during some evenings, weekends and public
    holidays. A time-off in lieu system is operated by the Trust.
