Biodiversity Ranger Apprentice required at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (Level 4
Apprenticeship for 2.5 years)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic person with a keen interest in biodiversity to
support our Rangers and Community Green Space Officer with practical habitat management works
and volunteer group support across the borough as the foundation of a career in the environment
and conservation sector.

You will be a good team player with a desire to learn more about habitat management and
biodiversity conservation managing woodland, scrub, heathland and species rich grassland.

This is very much a hands-on practical position but there is also a small amount of IT skills
required to carry out the role.

You will be a good communicator as working with and alongside volunteer and friends groups is
an essential requirement of the role.

Main responsibilities

  1. Grass cutting (and collection, in species – rich areas).
  2. Thicket thinning and scrub clearance.
  3. Path and fence repairs.
  4. Woodland coppice work and woodland ride clearance.
  5. Hedge cutting and hedge laying.
  6. Pond and stream clearance.
  7. Tree planting.
  8. Wild flower and grass seeding.
  9. Leading volunteer work parties.
  10. Tool maintenance and vehicle administration.
  11. Support with volunteer group set-up.
  12. Event planning support.

Skills and Competencies required

  1. Highly motivated individual
  2. Well-organised and able to take direction
  3. Strong team work skills
  4. competent IT skills with experience of MS office
  5. Keen attention to detail
  6. Proactive and flexible approach to work
  7. Full UK driving license
  8. Applicants must be 18 or over
