Research Assistant in Microbiology

We are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly-motivated Research Assistant to join the research group of Professor Christoph Tang. The post holder’s primary responsibilities will be to conduct research, and to work independently in a laboratory handling enteric pathogens. The project will involve studying virulence and resistance plasmids in Shigella and other enteric pathogens. This requires experience of transformation of bacterial transformation with plasmid DNA, immuno-fluorescence imaging of bacteria, and confocal microscopy.

The post-holder must have a BSc in a relevant subject (microbiology, molecular biology, or biomedical science). It is essential that candidates have practical experience in working with bacterial pathogens, in particular at containment level 3. Evident ability to work independently with human pathogens is required. Candidates must have good communication and record keeping skills and the ability to effectively manage research projects. Good organisational skills and willingness to work as part of a team are essential. Some work will be in a LMIC, so prior work in LMICs is a requirement.
