University of Bristol
The roleA postdoctoral position is available under the guidance of Dr Christopher Clements in the School of Biological Sciences (University of Bristol) and in collaboration with Dr Thomas Gorochowski, as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional grant investigating the role of genetic engineering in ecological restoration. This is an open-ended position with funding currently secured until 30 April 2026, with a start date of the 1st of July 2024.What will you be doing? You will carry out laboratory experiments using ciliate protozoa and cyanobacteria to understand how ecological complexity (abiotic and biotic conditions) can impact the longevity of genetic modifications aimed at cleaning up pollutants in natural systems. Such tests are key to safeguarding and testing genetic modifications for use in the real-world systems. These results will feed into the broader research themes of the project including cyanobacterial engineering, bio-security, and the biological removal of pollutants, and you will be expected to liaise and collaborate with the other PDRA’s on the project. You will be embedded in a large project spanning multiple institutions with opportunities to travel and collaborate with scientists from a diverse suite of backgrounds. Moreover, you will be a part of a vibrant research group working on ecological dynamics using a range of techniques from laboratory experiments, to modelling, to the analysis of long-term real-world data sets, with plenty of opportunity to collaborate. You should apply ifYou will have a PhD (awarded or imminent) in a relevant biological subject, a strong interest in population and/or community ecology, experience conducting experiments and analysing the data collected from them. You will be highly motivated, collaborative, and an excellent communicator, and have a demonstrable desire to learn new skills.Additional informationFor informal enquiries please contact Dr Chris Clements ( ).Our strategy and missionWe recently launched our to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values. The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential.
