Involving four universities and various rural organisations, the Rural Wales LPIP is working to connect researchers, communities and policymakers to support inclusive and sustainable development in rural Wales. The Research Associate will support the work of the LPIP by contributing to research and analysis on social, cultural, economic and environmental rural themes, and assisting with the production of high-quality project reports and academic outputs.This position is full-time and fixed term for 12 months.Salary: £40,497 – £45,413 per annum (Grade 6).   • To conduct research within social, cultural, economic and/or environmental themes relating to rural Wales and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, and publishing in national academic journals and conferences,
  • To analyse statistical datasets, interview materials and/or policy documents using standard quantitative and qualitative techniques
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world

Salary Range Max.45,413GradeGrade 6Salary Range Min.40,497Job CategoryAcademic – ResearchCareer PathwayResearchPerson SpecificationEssential CriteriaQualifications and Education * Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience * An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields:

  • Human geography or other cognate discipline
  • Social, cultural, economic and/or environmental research fields
  • Knowledge of current status of research in specialist field including the ability to work with qualitative and/or quantitative methods of research and analysis and to summarise appropriately.
  • Proven ability to publish in international journals and present at national/international academic and / or policy conferences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies.

Communication and Team Working * Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication.
Other * Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work.

  • Proven ability to work without close supervision.

Desirable Criteria * Evidence of collaborations with public, private or third sector organisations.

  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School.
  • Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh or to commit to engaging with the Welsh language within the project’s work programme.
