The Advanced Materials Group within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham has world-leading expertise in the selection, manufacture and performance assessment of materials for engineering components operating in aggressive environments. This is based on developing a sound understanding of the relationships between material characteristics (e.g. composition and microstructure) and performance.
We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate/Fellow to work, as part of a team, on a research project in collaboration with Rolls-Royce under the supervision of Prof Philip Shipway. The focus of the research will be on microstructural and tribological characterisation of stainless steel-based hardfacings with a focus on assessment and understanding of their galling performance for deployment in critical components within power generation systems.
Applicants must hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in engineering or related physical science area (for example in materials science/engineering, mechanical engineering, a physical science or another relevant discipline). Excellent knowledge of, and practical skills in, the following are essential: (i) microstructural characterisation of engineering materials; (ii) characterisation of surface and sub-surface degradation of engineering materials due to wear. A track record of research in the area of characterisation or performance of stainless steels or hardfacings is also essential. The candidate must also possess excellent communication skills in English (both orally and in writing), suitable for the preparation of scientific reports and presentations to the industrial sponsor.
The University of Nottingham is committed to providing competitive employment packages whilst supporting the well-being of our staff to help them reach their full potential. As a University employee, you will have access to the resources of the university as well as a range of benefits and rewards, including staff discounts and travel schemes and a highly attractive pension scheme.
