The ultra-thin opto-acoustic fibre optic probe project will develop new instrumentation to measure the mechanical properties of soft matter like tissues, through the interaction of acoustic interface waves and will focus on the classification of healthy and disease state for several types of cancer.
The project will develop new ultrasound transducers on the tip of optical fibers to convert light into soundwaves that can probe the tissues/cells in contact with the fiber tip. The transducer development will require experience of fabrication and characterisation of micro/nano structures.
Testing the devices will involve the design and construction of optical instrumentation and fiber optics.
The instrument will be validated on a range of biological samples, so experience of handling cells / tissue samples will be an advantage.
This research project works at the interface between engineering and cancer science, the candidate should have an organised and proactive approach to project management. Additionally, we expect this project will lead to many high-impact publications – an energetic, efficient and ambitious approach to academic writing will be an advantage.
The candidate will join one of the leading optics and photonic research groups in the UK and one of the foremost groups in laser-ultrasonics world-wide. Our labs are situated in well-funded state-of-the-art facilities and have a reputation for pushing the boundaries of physical possibility.
Good research methodology, communication skills and the ability to work in a team are essential. The successful candidate will be expected to liaise with industrial partners, prepare and present reports and disseminate results of their work through academic publications and presentations.
Candidates should hold, or be shortly due to obtain a PhD, or equivalent, in a topic encompassing physics, electronics, optics, ultrasonics or engineering backgrounds.
This position will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 28th February 2027. Hours are full time (36.25 hours per week). Job share arrangements may be considered.
Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to: Richard Smith ([email protected]).
Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
