This is an opportunity for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU ) at Imperial College London to study the health impact of environmental exposures using a variety of epidemiological methods and data. You will be involved in designing, analysing and interpreting findings from large-scale population-based and cohort studies of linked administrative health, environmental exposure and socio-demographic data.
This post is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Environmental Exposures and Health (EEH) led by Professor Frank Kelly in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Key collaborations will be with the Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards Directorate at UKHSA and epidemiologists, biostatisticians, public health professionals and clinicians in the MRC Centre for Environment and Health and the NIHR HPRU in Chemical and Radiation Threats and Hazards .
We are seeking a talented epidemiologist who is familiar with the analysis and interpretation of population-based and cohort studies. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary research group and you will have the opportunity to develop expertise through collaboration with geo-spatial epidemiologists, biostatisticians, public health professionals, environmental exposure scientists and modellers and database managers.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for developing and undertaking epidemiological analyses of large-scale linked datasets constructed from health, environmental exposure and socio-demographic data and a range of statistical methods including small-area methodologies. You will be using health data from the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit. This database contains birth and death registrations and hospital admissions data for the population of England from data providers including NHS Digital and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). These data are georeferenced and at high temporal and spatial resolution.
You should hold a PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics or related quantitative discipline and have a thorough understanding of epidemiological concepts in observational studies. You should also have an understanding of the wider determinants of health, including the relationship between environment and health inequalities. Experience in handling big administrative data is important. You should be motivated and extremely organised with experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
The post is full time and fixed term until 31 October 2025 in first instance based at the White City Campus of Imperial College London.
