Cardiff Business School

Cardiff Business School is seeking to recruit several  Research Associates (Post-Doctoral) across its five academic Sections, who will be responsible to a named academic line manager within one Section. Applications are welcome from PhD graduates who can work on interdisciplinary teams (e.g., innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, circular economy, and more) across two or more of the School’s academic sections:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Economics
  • Logistics and Operations Management
  • Management, Employment and Organization
  • Marketing and Strategy

These are developmental roles aimed at supporting recent PhD graduates from the Business School to prepare for an academic career whilst making a material contribution to the School’s research activities.

The main functions of the post are:

  • To take the individual’s PhD research forward within an area closely aligned to the Public Value priorities of Cardiff Business School and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, including the dissemination of outputs through the publication of work in high-quality academic journals, research engagement and impact.
  • To support of the individual’s academic career development through the enhancement of learning and teaching expertise, and access to teaching development opportunities under the supervision of established academic colleagues.
  • To make good citizenship contributions as appropriate, such as attending research seminars and section meetings.

These posts are full-time (35 hours per week) and advertised on a fixed term basis for 18 months.

This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you may spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. The University is committed to offering this flexibility, wherever the role and business need allows, supporting work-life balance.

Salary: £39,347 – £44,263 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description

Main function

This is a developmental post aimed at supporting recent PhD students from the Business School to prepare for an academic career whilst making a material contribution to the School’s research activities. The main functions of the post are:

  • To take the individual’s PhD research forward within an area closely aligned to the Public Value priorities of Cardiff Business School and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, including the dissemination of outputs through the publication of work in high-quality academic journals and research engagement and impact.
  • In support of the individual’s academic career development, to undertake an element of teaching and teaching-support under the supervision of established academic colleagues.
  • To make good citizenship contributions as appropriate, such as attending research seminars.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Engagement

Under the supervision and guidance of a mentor:

  • To conduct research within an area of research closely aligned to the School’s Public Value interests and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including journal submissions and publications, dissemination of research findings, impact and engagement activities and bidding for funding.
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To learn to develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals, where appropriate.
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the agreed research proposal, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • To participate in wider School research and impact activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the University, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.

Teaching Development

To support the individual’s academic career development, and under the supervision and guidance of experienced colleagues, to engage in teaching and teaching support activities, including:

  • Preparing and delivering teaching material.
  • Contributing to team teaching activities and programme level discussions and developments.
  • Undertaking assessment and moderation, including providing feedback to students.
  • Undertaking module evaluation, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving own performance.

Other

  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance and academic career potential.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level from Cardiff Business School (Category 1 or Category 2 Viva awards) awarded in the past 12 months.
  • An excellent knowledge of the current status of research in chosen specialist field and an established expertise and proven portfolio of research within an area of research aligned to one of the School’s disciplines and to the School’s Public Value mission.
  • A strong desire to work to support the School’s Public Value mission.
  • Proven ability to produce research outputs that meet the standards of peer-reviewed journals in the field.
  • Proven ability to work without effectively without close supervision.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working and of effective and persuasive communication.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School.
  • A strong desire to undertake teaching and teaching-related activities.
