Job Summary

We are seeking to hire a Research Fellow (Post-Doc) to join the TMF/EPSRC CHEDDAR Communications Hub. The aim of the Hub is to drive research across the UK academic community through Synergy Fellows with Project and Platform funding, to facilitate the connection of UK excellence, and to encourage brave new ideas in Communications and Networking research. The Hub aims to examine new emerging computation (e.g. quantum etc.), next generation infrastructures, and with an end-user focus. We aim to co-create a cohesive research ecosystem nurturing talent and emerging blue horizon ideas.

The role of the Synergy Fellow is to jointly carry out research and also scope the national UK’s communications research areas, industrial requirements, and to identify excellence and gaps, and synthesise this knowledge in a coherent way to inform Hub strategy, standards and policy efforts. The focus of CHEDDAR lies where the world of communications interfaces with next generation computing, distributed systems. It will be expected that the candidate will have a PhD in the Communications field that demonstrates knowledge of the spectrum of the subject from theory to practical implementation.

The position of the CHEDDAR Research Synergy Fellow presents a novel opportunity to work alongside Professor McCann and her UK wide Hub team in realizing their full potential and planning. CHEDDAR is a close collaboration of academics and researchers from Imperial, Cranfield, York, Leeds, Glasgow and Durham Universities as well as partners from industry. The partner list is expected to grow as the Hub activities commence. While based at Imperial College, the successful researcher will be expected to travel and work with the CHEDDAR universities and also host workshops across the UK.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in subjects related to Networks and Communications
  • Experience of carrying out and publishing research that would contribute to 6G communications
  • Demonstrable ability to synthesis application demands and leading communications systems research.
  • Have an understanding of:
    • signal processing algorithms,
    • network optimisation
    • practical implementation
  • Experience with publicity, scientific writing for general audiences and social media.
