The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) home of the 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) is looking to recruit 2 research fellows in Network Security. This exciting opportunity will contribute to the UK collaborative research project: “HiPer-RAN (Highly Intelligent, Highly Performing and Highly Open RAN)” The project is part of the Future Open Networks Research and Open Networks Ecosystem programme funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve – shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee. Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.
The role
The project targets the development of a highly efficient, RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) platform with measurable system-level benefits. This initiative is our response to the Open Networks Ecosystem Competition by the UK Open Networks Research and Development (R&D) Fund, which challenges us to develop open mobile networks for scenarios. It aims to create a highly intelligent, highly performing RAN that can efficiently handle diverse network demands and service requirements.
The University of Surrey, recognised for its advanced research capabilities and in-depth understanding of communications technology, will be the lead partner in this project. Particularly noteworthy is their expertise in cyber security, an area that will significantly contribute to the success of the project.
You will work in the area of network security and aims to conduct threat analysis, design of intrusion detection systems, and network monitoring to this project architecture and its components. The work will also analyse various secure cyber security scenarios and demonstrate proof of concept for secure traffic and signals and establish procedures for incident response and recovery and access control. Finally, deploy proof-of-concept secure detection services over the non-/near-real-time RIC and within the 5G/6GIC testbed.
About you
You should have a graduate degree related to network, computer sciences or engineering with specialisation in cyber security. Good simulation skills for proof of concept and programming skills are required for the realisation of secure IP multicasting within the 5GIC testbed. Research experience in related areas would be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be joining a very strong and vibrant research team and will be supported by academic staff and PhD students working on the programme, although he/she will be expected to coordinate as well as contribute to the research.
