About usWe are seeking an enthusiastic individual with an interest in research on loneliness and mental health to join a team based in the within the . The post is that of the Network Co-ordinator of the funded by the . The post-holder will join a team of researchers, including PhD and MSc students, and a Co-production Group (CoG) of lived experience experts engaged in studying the links between loneliness and mental health problems and accelerating research in this field.This is a full-time post, funded until July 2027 in the first instance.The Loneliness and Social Isolation in Mental Health Research Network (LSIMHRN) is jointly led by Professor Sonia Johnson, Professor Alexandra Pitman and Professor Brynmor Lloyd-Evans. The Network was launched in December 2018 and was one of eight UKRI-funded researcher networks. It is currently funded by the until March 2028.The role would include contributing to research in these areas, helping to support post-graduate students (PhD and MSc) working on relevant studies to publish in peer-reviewed journals and as accessible blogs for a wider audience. They would also contribute to developing research grant applications and helping to sustain the day-to-day running of the loneliness network, including working with the network’s Lived Experience Co-Production Group (CoG) to integrate personal experience perspectives into research. The three Network leads will also support the person appointed in applying for their own funding, especially if in a similar research area.The UCL Division of Psychiatry, located within the Faculty of Brain Sciences, is a world-leading interdisciplinary centre for research and education concerned with mental health and illness across the life course.   • Contribute to high-quality research focused on loneliness and social isolation among individuals with severe mental health conditions, producing evidence-based recommendations for policy and practice.
  • Contribute to grant applications on the topic of loneliness and mental health.
  • Support PhD and MSc students with their research projects, and mentor them on publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Network.
  • Coordinate the Lived Experience Co-Production Group (CoG) and facilitate consultancy opportunities.
  • Organise the monthly research seminars and the network’s annual research events.
  • Prepare and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, social media posts, conferences, and stakeholder-focused materials e.g., quarterly newsletters and blogs, ensuring accessibility to diverse audiences.
  • Seek out opportunities for funding in this research area, with support from the Network leads, to secure grants and sustain research activities.
  • Compile progress reports for monitoring and evaluation of the Network’s research initiatives and operational outcomes.
  • Contributing, where required, to the administration of the LSIMHRN
  • Assisting the Network leads in supporting and coordinating other members of the research team.

Teaching and supervisionSubject to the regulations of the funding bodies, appropriately qualified members of research staff will be expected to contribute to teaching or other departmental activities. Currently, this is estimated to amount to a maximum of 30 contact teaching hours per annum for full-time staff, with opportunities to develop and deliver teaching on our Master’s programmes Mental Health Sciences and contributing informal advice and training of other research staff and students as appropriate.Personal development opportunitiesWe will strongly encourage and support the post-holder to develop their research career: this may include personal fellowship applications where appropriate. The post-holder will be expected to formulate a personal development plan and to capitalise on training opportunities at UCL as appropriate.Appointment details:

  • The post is graded on the non-clinical research staff Pay Scale Grade 7, the annual salary for which ranges from £43,374 to £51,860 (including London Allowance).
  • The appointment is available from 1st June 2025 until the end of July 2027 in the first instance.

About youYou will have an PhD or equivalent qualification in psychology, mental health, social psychiatry, or similar relevant experience. You will have experience of conducting high quality academic research using methods mentioned in the job description. Your application will demonstrate evidence of publication of original research in peer-reviewed health or clinical journals. Experience of producing other dissemination materials for diverse audiences is an advantage, as is evidence of interest in loneliness/social isolation/social determinants of mental health. It will also be advantageous to have experience of developing and maintaining successful working relationships with service users and carers, researchers, and mental health staff, and experience of managing, supervising and supporting more junior researchers. The post-holder will be motivated and resourceful; an effective, independent worker.
