Researcher Sensor-based data science in Animal Physiology and Welfare

As a researcher within the Adaptation Physiology group of Wageningen University and Research, you will be involved in several projects running in our group. In all of these projects, we aim to investigate health, welfare and resilience of animals (currently mainly cattle, pigs and poultry) from a physiological and behavioural point of view. In our studies, we collect large-scale physiological and behavioral data, both at individual and group level, in longitudinal studies. Current data types include video recordings, acceleration measurements and feed intake records, auditory data, and olfactory data. Sensor-based observations are currently an integral part of our measurements to understand the physiology and behaviour of animals. You will be involved in the selection and validation of sensors that can be used for animals, and analysis of the data, including the development of algorithms. You are up-to-date with existing sensor and data science and you advice and collaborate with the other researchers in the group focusing on advanced data science techniques and the use of sensors within our research projects.You will work at the Adaptation Physiology group
The (ADP) studies how adaptation to a changing and challenging environment impacts welfare, health and resilience of animals. We do this in a multidisciplinary manner, by combining expertise in energy metabolism, behaviour, immunology, reproductive physiology and modelling. We contribute to the quality of life by providing knowledge about conditions that facilitate welfare, health and resilience in animals. The Adaptation Physiology group comprises over 50 members from diverse international backgrounds, including 16 scientific staff members, 27 PhD candidates and seven research assistants. The Adaptation Physiology group is one of the 12 chair groups within the department of Animal Sciences. We have strong collaborations with other research groups within and beyond this department. Collaborations also exist with data science and computational groups within and outside WUR.Requirements You are a real teamplayer, so you are able a to work in a multidisciplinary team. You are effective in organizing your own work and assisting other researchers in achieving an efficient workflow. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between €3378,- and €5331,- for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the (scale 10). Additionally, a contract for 0,8 FTE can be discussed. Initially, we offer you a one-year contract, which will then be extended to an open-ended contract if there is mutual enthusiasm.
