The Senior Archivist is responsible for the day to day operational management of the Special Collections service, which holds extensive collections of manuscripts, rare books and audiovisual material. They are a key part of increasing access (digital and physical) and managing a range of projects, including line management.

This role is varied and dynamic, and will offer excellent scope for development to the right candidate. The postholder will work closely alongside the Head of Special Collections, the rest of the Special Collections team and colleagues across Library Services. 

  • You will be responsible for all aspects of collections management including appraisal, accessioning, cataloguing, discoverability and accessibility of physical and digital archives
  • You will assist all users (and potential users) of the collections including students, academics, researchers and the public, providing professional expertise to raise the profile and use of Special Collections for a wide range of audiences
  • You will build strong working relationships and networks, both internally and externally across the archival, cultural and HE sectors
  • You will help to ensure all procedures and services align with sector/accreditation standards, legislation and best practice
  • You will manage projects and budgets and line manage members of the team, and help to develop and fundraise for new projects
  • You are a qualified and/or experienced archivist who has managed projects and people
  • You have up-to-date knowledge of best practice in collections care and management
  • You have a high degree of digital literacy, including experience with digital archives and managing collections management systems
  • You have excellent communication skills and an ability to reach and enthuse new audiences
