Vacancy Overview
Full-time, fixed term contract (31 December 2025).

You will join the Warwick Medical School Mental Health and Wellbeing Unit as a Senior Research Fellow working on the NIHR project “High-quality mental capacity assessments for healthcare decisions: improving Leadership, assessment Procedures, and service user Support (HELPS)”. HELPS is a 30 month project at the Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, in partnership with researchers from the Warwick Business School and from the University of Bristol, University of East Anglia, and University of York and with NHS, social care and third sector organisations in England and Wales, as established during the research.
You will have a PhD in a medical, public health, global health or health-related social science, together with experience of using mixed methods in research involving case studies, surveys, and/or cohort studies. Experience of qualitative methods, in particular ethnographic and participatory methods will be essential. This position is for a researcher with a track record of being part of research teams, evidence of publications and experience in supervising and supporting researchers in the field. As a senior research fellow, you will be expected to carry out research within the HELPS project.
You will have specialist knowledge and significant experience in health services research, together with excellent oral and written communication and collaborative skills. You must be willing and able to travel nationally for meetings, and to help organise such meetings. You will have an ability to produce high quality reports and other project outputs, and to present and publish work. Knowledge and skill in literature searching and use of electronic databases together with Microsoft Office and Review Manager, Endnote or equivalent are also essential. You will be encouraged to continue to train and develop skills to undertake high quality empirical and methodological research.

Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
As a member of the Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing Research and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Unit, the postholder will be the responsible for delivering specialist research within the project, and for supporting Professor Giacco in the overall delivery of the project.
HELPS is a 30-month project funded by the NIHR. The project aims to improve implementation of the Mental Capacity Act through understanding current practices and policies and developing and testing co-produced change actions with stakeholders including service users, carers and professionals within and outside the NHS. The project is led from Warwick Medical School (PI Professor Domenico Giacco), which also has overall management responsibility for the HELPS project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To work with WMS staff and other partners via formal group/committee work, informal networks and one-to-one liaison, to undertake work for the HELPS project.
2. To liaise with HELPS partners in a timely and effective manner to ensure that assigned project milestones and deliverables are achieved.
3. To train and support HELPS team members in Warwick and Bristol.
4. To work closely with WMS staff and partners to obtain relevant ethics approvals and ensure adherence to all research governance requirements at all partner sites.
5. To produce high quality reports and other outputs on the HELPS project, to present work at national and international meetings and to publish work in international high-quality peer reviewed journals.
6. To attend departmental meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within the department, the faculty and the University.
7. To undertake any specific departmental roles and management functions as may be reasonably required by the Project Lead.
8. To develop and deliver specialist research within the HELPS project.

Essential Criteria 1
PhD in health-related or social science discipline (psychiatry, health services research or psychology, philosophy, anthropology, sociology). (a)
