Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology is a pioneering Faculty, dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge and opportunities to ensure that all our students can excel within their chosen discipline.

LJMU is proud to be a centre of excellence for the development of highly trained, sustainability led engineers who are equipped with the necessary skills to drive the country forward.

In 1825 we opened England’s first Mechanics’ Institute in Liverpool, teaching mechanics, arithmetic and engineering draftsmanship. In 1892 we made history again and opened England’s first Nautical College.

Today, the School of Engineering, which has grown out of both landmark institutions, is one of the UK’s leading centres for mechanical, electrical and maritime engineering education. We have an outstanding reputation for producing world-leading research and have business partners across the world.

We are now looking for a Senior Teaching Fellow in Thermodynamics who will make an important contribution to our teaching and learning provision in the subject area of engineering Thermodynamics.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced academic or expert industry practitioner to take on an exciting role and to develop a career shaping the next generation of professional engineers.

You will teach from Level 3 through to Level 7. Using both your subject expertise and your experience in a research or industry environment, you will engage and inspire our students.

You will be committed to ensuring an outstanding student experience and will:

  • Lead on the delivery of teaching thermodynamics, contributing to relevant modules at all levels.
  • Contribute to the broader teaching portfolio across the school, supporting curriculum enrichment, recruitment, and outreach.
  • Develop engaging and authentic practical experiences for students.
  • Lead projects with industry and other organisations to enhance the teaching capability of the school.
  • Contribute to the pastoral care and academic supervision of taught students.
  • Contribute to an excellent learning environment, which is oriented towards achieving high levels of employability for the School of Engineering’s graduates.

Research and scholarship are core activities within the School of Engineering. You will be encouraged and supported to sustain and develop their research and scholarship.

You will hold an honours degree or postgraduate degree in a relevant engineering discipline. You will also either hold a PhD, an equivalent qualification or will be able to evidence a significant body of relevant industrial experience.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join LJMU in our bicentenary year and with the launch of our new strategic plan.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Director of School, Dr Christian Matthews ([email protected])
