Technical Manager (Biomedical Sciences Building, Research and Facilities)

The Faculty of Life Sciences is made up of five schools, which in total supports over 3700 students and over 800 staff members. These schools are: 

  • Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience
  • Biological sciences
  • Cellular & Molecular Medicine
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychological science

Working as part of a wider diverse technical support team, the role holder will provide essential support and leadership for experienced technicians whose main responsibility is to support research activities for the schools of Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience (PP&N), Biochemistry, Cellular & Molecular Medicine (CMM) based in the Biomedical sciences building.

The Faculty Technical Service team currently comprises of 65 staff members who enable teaching and research activities to happen for each of the schools. The successful candidate will manage a team of c.28 of which are the dedicated resource for research support for the Biomedical building.

It is a great time to join the faculty as it comes together with the Faculty of Health Sciences with an exciting and shared vision for the future. The role holder will be a key member of the local and wider technical services team who will help build on and evolve the excellent delivery of research support.

Development and support of the research groups and teams, understanding the appropriate resources and skills needed for the team to be successful.

Working with academic colleagues and the existing technical teams to understand the research needs and future demands. Capturing and documenting these whilst supporting the team in the operational delivery.

Development of processes that will enable information and requirements to be captured and understood by all stake holders.

Contribute and take an active part in senior technical services team for the faculty.

Development of longer-term plans which will enable the team and the faculty to rise to new challenges.

The successful candidate will have a passion for delivery of excellence and great interpersonal and communication skills. Having the ability to understand and interpret a range of complex and detailed information will be key. A true team player who looks to develop and nurture the team wherever possible.

You should apply if you can evidence the above attributes and at least more than one of the following skills or experience:

  • Good project planning and management skills.
  • A proven management and leadership experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in wet labs.
  • Knowledge of supporting Research activities, practices, and techniques preferably within a scientific or H.E. environment.
  • Good working knowledge of Health and safety requirements.
