The School of Physics is looking for an enthusiastic chemist to support various research groups on all chemical-related matters. The role-holder will manage a suite of laboratories and will provide essential technical support and troubleshoot any issues to ensure the smooth and effective running of the service. The School of Physics presents a high variety of projects involving chemicals requiring a broad and extensive knowledge of chemistry e.g electrochemistry, ionic liquids, etching solutions etc. The role-holder will be expected to learn new and specialist techniques as required to provide the highest quality support to research activities.
The role-holder, as first point of contact on chemical queries, will provide specialist advice and instruction on chemical safety and will produce and review documents such as Risk Assessments and standard operating procedures and will train/induct others to safe practices and specialised techniques. The post holder will be part of both the technical team and the safety team and as such will be expected to provide a high standard of support to researchers and students.
You must have an extensive experience in working with chemicals in a laboratory setting. Your knowledge of chemicals and chemical reactions should ideally be proven e.g. peer-review publications;
You should be interested in learning new techniques and areas of research e.g. electrodeposition, radiation, biophysics, ceramics etc.
You must have proven experience of managing a laboratory and in meeting customer’s expectations.
Experience in writing risk assessments and a good knowledge of chemical-related legislation (e.g. COSHH, DSEAR) in laboratory settings is essential.
You will need to be able to work independently. You must be highly organised with excellent time management, communication, and multi-tasking skills.
