  • This is a fixed term contract starting August 2024 until October 2025
  • £22,308 per annum + excellent benefits + accommodation available (subject to

  • Full time opportunity – notional average 37.5 hours per week

What does a Trainee Tutor opportunity involve?

Our Trainee Tutors are welcomed onto our Graduate Development Programme which is designed to
prepare individuals with the skills and attributes to become Outdoor Education Tutors. During
the programme each Trainee Tutor will work towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Outdoor
Activity Instructor Apprenticeship qualification.

Alongside your studies, you will build experience working with primary and secondary schools to
deliver curriculum-linked activities that will increase students’ understanding of nature and
the environment. Following successful completion of this programme, more than 80% of our
apprentice tutors go on to be employed as permanent tutors with the Field Studies Council!

What will you gain?

  • Learn to provide active outdoor learning in a variety of environments, weather conditions
    and terrain, being able to deliver standard courses to visiting primary and secondary groups.
  • Learn more about how to work with and support teaching staff in course delivery, involving
    welcoming groups and preparing classrooms, resources, equipment, and IT.
  • Support in the delivery of community and outreach activities and events.
  • Be a part of our duty system that requires evening or overnight cover – an important part
    of the service provision to our groups and learners as well as a core part of working in this
    industry.
  • Build your skills in adaptability as you navigate working with new people and adapt to new
    environments.
  • The opportunity to be based in a couple of different Field Studies Council locations during
    your time with us – each centre has a unique learning experience to offer you and those you
    deliver learning experiences to.
  • The opportunity to learn alongside experienced teams as well as your fellow cohort of
    Trainee Tutors, building an invaluable network of professional contacts along the way

Where will you be based?

You will work and learn alongside our education teams of likeminded people who have a great
team ethic at our Field Studies Council centres.

The current locations involved in the 2024-2025 programme are listed below, but subject to
change;

  • Blencathra (Lake District National Park)
  • Juniper Hall (Surrey Hills AONB)
  • Nettlecombe Court (Somerset, Exmoor National Park)
  • Preston Montford (Shropshire)
  • Slapton Ley (South Devon AONB)

Each centre is set in a beautiful and unique location close to amazing fieldwork sites! You can

While we will ask your preference on where you would like to be based and take this into
consideration, we will ultimately look to place you at a centre according to our business needs
and your development objectives, so your placement location can’t be guaranteed.

To support your development, we may discuss with you, possible moves to another one of our
locations at some point in the duration of your fixed term contract. This will allow you to
learn alongside a different and experienced team while also gaining that essential experience
in diverse outdoor environments.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for individuals who are educated to degree level in Science, Geography,
Environmental Studies or a closely allied discipline. In addition, you’ll have:

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for being in the outdoor environment.
  • The ability to use standard office software, social media and SMART technology to
    effectively support learning.
  • A great work ethic where aptitude and attitude are key.
  • A natural pride in your work and impact.
  • A flexible and adaptive approach able to perform using your own initiative both
    independently and as a team player.
  • A professional approach to all that you do.
  • Empathy with the aims and objectives of Field Studies Council.
  • A committed and proactive approach to personal development; motivated to learn new skills
    and overcome new challenges.

An interview assessment is scheduled to take place on 9 and 10 June 2024 at Field Studies
Council Preston Montford in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

We will need you to arrive for 4pm on Sunday 9th June. Overnight accommodation will be provided
free of charge.

The interview assessment will include a variety of tasks, which will allow you to learn more
about the work we do at Field Studies Council and how our centres operate.

If you are unable to attend our interview assessment, we may be also able to accommodate an
online interview, so please still submit your application if interested.
