Tutor in Modern History

Salary: £32,982 to £37,099 per annum together with USS

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

Contract: Fixed term until the 30/06/24

Location: This position will be based on the Singleton Campus

The Department of History, Heritage, and Classics is located within the School of Culture and Communication , in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Swansea University. It employs more than 30 permanent staff teaching and researching in Ancient History, Classics, Egyptology, Heritage Studies, and History, and is home to undergraduate and MA programmes covering these disciplines, American Studies, and War and Society. In the 2021 REF, the department achieved a GPA of 3.09 overall, with 76% of its outputs, impact, and environment judged world-leading or internationally excellent. The department prides itself on offering research-led teaching to a diverse cohort of students, thereby enabling them to achieve their academic potential and equipping them for employment in a wide range of sectors. We therefore seek to employ staff committed to the pursuit of teaching excellence.

 The department is looking to appoint a Tutor in Modern History, with a focus on Britain and/or the British Empire and its legacies, to provide maternity cover.  The successful candidate will possess the adaptability and breadth of interests to contribute to existing modules in our programmes. While we are open to all fields of modern history, we would be particularly keen to appoint someone whose work to date encompasses any of the following: environmental history; history of medicine or mental health;  history of race, gender, or sexuality.

The main responsibilities of the postholder will comprise:

• Contributions to the second-year team-taught compulsory module, The Practice of History. This will involve leading a seminar group in the exploration of a historical theme or set of historical sources of the postholder’s choice, developing students’ research skills and preparing them to devise and carry out a final-year dissertation.
• Contributions to the first-year optional team-taught module, Britain and the World, 1800-2000.
• Supervision of undergraduate dissertation students.
• Administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department.

• Contributions to our MA programmes, to the Humanities Foundation Year.

The successful applicant will have a postgraduate degree in History or a related subject; they may have, or be in the process of completing, a doctorate.
