Role description
We are looking for a flexible, organised candidate with good attention to detail and who shares
our commitment to climate justice, to support Fossil Free London with:
- campaigning on carbon bombs – Rosebank and possibly EACOP
- campaigning on fossil finance – Barclays and possibly other targets
- supporting our committee of volunteers to organise against the fossil fuel industry
We are seeking a candidate with considerable experience of campaigning, organising or activism
over at least 2 years. Both paid and unpaid experience will be considered.
It is crucial that the candidate is a proactive self-starter and able to work under direction.
We need someone highly organised, able to juggle multiple competing priorities, and who is able
to think of the smaller details while working on the bigger picture.
You need to be happy to work both independently and with direction in a start-up style,
fast-paced, dynamic environment.
The candidate should have prior experience of working in a fast paced environment
and communicating adeptly over shared work to ensure efficient completion of tasks. An adept
facilitator of meetings with strong interpersonal skills, who is confident in using a range of
media to achieve campaign goals.
The candidate should be flexible, with availability on some evenings and weekends each week to
host meetings and attend demonstrations.
Applicants must live in, or have easy access to, London, and must be legally entitled to work
in the UK.
Our organisation
Fossil Free London is a grassroots activist group which opposes the presence of fossil fuel
companies and fossil fuel finance in our city, and explores what London could be without them.
We are currently going through a period of growth and expansion, and the role provides space to
grow and learn new skills, as well as take responsibility for work strands. If there are other

Responsibilities
Protest organising
- Coordinate protests at strategically agreed times to support campaign goals and in line
with funding objectives - Plan, host, and take clear action points at meetings to plan protests
- Encourage a wide range of group members to facilitate meetings to organise actions –
events, demonstrations and campaign moments - Delegate and encourage to ensure: group members develop skills in organising, our goals of
sharing organising through the group and empowering group members are met, and the workload
remains sustainable - Have a clear sense of activist security and encourage a culture of protection within the
group - Book photographers and videographers for demonstrations and give them clear briefs
- Write and contribute to creative plans for demonstrations
- Assist members to monitor and evaluate protests in line with group objectives
- Keep a diligent record of action coverage on social media and in the press
- A specific campaign focus may be developed (Shell, Rosebank, Barclays etc.)
Volunteer support
- Develop and maintain positive, professional and supportive relationships with Fossil Free
London volunteers - Facilitate their empowerment to take lead roles in organising specific demonstrations and
taking initiative to suggest campaign targets and shape organisational goals. - Organise events with volunteers
- Help introduce volunteers into the group, possibly through welcome talks
Budgeting
- Keep careful note of expenses and receipts
- Submit expenses in a timely manner
- Keep track of spending with Director
Funding
- Help the Director to ensure we meet funding objectives
Network
- Creating and maintaining relationships with other groups and organisations
- Representing the organisation in external events and meetings
Online communications
- Use Awareness of how social media channels such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Tiktok
can be used to achieve campaign goals - Occasional content creation for social media in line with branding guidelines
- Maintain website on WordPress
- Create events on Action Network, Eventbrite and keep the shared calendar updated
- Keep members up to date on our actions through frequently updating them via communication
channels, principally Signal and email at this time - Send newsletters, at this time via Action Network
- Ability to get key messages across in a creative format (as e.g. banner slogans, social
media posts, action ideas)
Key skills and experience

Essential:
- Passion for environmental action
- A clear understanding of the urgency of the climate crisis
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Strong understanding of climate issues, including links to social and racial justice
struggles - Experience of organising protests or demonstrations
- Understanding of relevant logistics and security issues
- Experience of organising and facilitating meetings of activists or volunteers,
- Experience welcoming, onboarding and supporting volunteers
- A history of environmental or relevant campaigning
- Strong team player
Desirable:
- Using social media as a campaigning tool, including Twitter, Insta and FB
- Website maintenance
- Speaking on camera and in social media videos
- Experience of writing activism, campaign or organising emails, updates and social media
content, either professionally or as an unpaid activist or organiser.

Process
The structure of the interview process will be: an aptitude test of some of the essential
skills listed above, which will be done remotely, a possible Zoom interview and then, if
relevant, an approximately 45 minute interview face to face in London asking about your
interest in the role, examples of your skills and experience and the ideas you will bring.
