Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The One Planet Network (OPN) is a multi-stakeholder platform that mobilizes a global movement for action on the environment. It brings together governments, businesses, NGOs and civil society to collaborate on solutions to address environmental challenges. The Ten-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) is a framework that provides a global framework to accelerate the shift towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP). The Office of the Head of the 10YFP / One Planet Network provides leadership and strategic direction for both initiatives. The intern will work under the close supervision of Jorge Laguna-Celis in the Office of the Head of the 10YFP / One Planet Network. The supervisor will provide guidance and feedback on the intern’s work, and will be responsible for monitoring the intern’s progress. Governance and Board Coordination: – Assist in preparing for and providing logistical support during 10YFP Board meetings. – Support the drafting of correspondence and meeting documents related to the 10YFP Board, including agendas, minutes, and decision papers. – Support the organization of the One Planet Network Forum to be held in September 2024. – Support the communication with member states and other stakeholders on 10YFP Board-related matters. – Contribute to the development and implementation of the 10YFP Board’s work plan. Communications and Research: – Assist with the development of internal communication materials related to the 10YFP activities. – Conduct research on relevant topics related to SCP and the work of the 10YFP Board. – Monitor and analyze media coverage of the 10YFP. – Contribute to the production of 10YFP/One Planet Network Newsletters
Qualifications/special skills
– Enrolled in a university degree program in communications, environmental studies, international relations, or a related field. – Excellent research, writing, and editing skills. – Strong organizational and time management skills. – Ability to work independently and as part of a team. – Excellente communication and interpersonnel skills. – Working knowledge of social media platforms is an asset. – Fully proficient computer skills and use of web-based platforms and relevant software e.g. word processing, PowerPoint, excel, internal databases, Internet etc.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: “fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
