Join us in creating the technology that helps the world act together

We are a B2B technology innovation leader pioneering the future where networks meet cloud. At Nokia you will have a positive impact on people’s lives and help build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and accessible world.

Be part of a culture built on an inclusive way of working where we are open to your ideas, you are empowered to take risks and are encouraged to be fearless in bringing your authentic self to work.

The team you’ll be part of

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The candidate will be part of the Network System & Security Research (NSSR) group of Bell Labs, whose aim is to securely orchestrate compute, data and network elements across heterogeneous environments. To achieve this goal, we work on a variety of topics ranging from extended computing and autonomous systems to E2E network security and data & knowledge privacy.

What you will learn and contribute to

We are seeking strong candidates to work with our researchers on topics of privacy in AI/ML regarding machine unlearning and the right to erasure of personal data.

As AI / ML applications become prevalent, consumers and data providers have raised substantial concerns about the privacy and potential misuse of their data sets. In response, contemporary data protection regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), have enacted provisions to safeguard user privacy through measures like the “right to be forgotten.” These provisions require the deletion of data samples upon request. Machine unlearning helps organizations enable the erasure of personal data from their AI/ML models and make their businesses more GDPR compliant.

In this position, you will conduct an in-depth analysis of contemporary research literature on machine unlearning methodologies. You will also contribute to the development and implementation of novel machine unlearning techniques within the scope of lifelong learning and perform a systematic evaluation of these techniques utilizing metrics specifically tailored for lifelong ML.

The internship requires a 6-month duration.  The position is remote, meaning that you will get all necessary tools (laptop and development environments to carry out your tasks) and you connect with the team members located in Espoo, Finland

  • Ideally you are working towards your master’s degree (or are a recent graduate, or a new PhD student) in the area of machine learning, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence or a similar field. We also expect you to have interest in security and privacy topics.
  • The position requires a good understanding of machine learning, particularly deep neural networks, along with coding skills in Python and deep learning frameworks (preferably PyTorch, but knowledge in other frameworks is also welcome).
  • Familiarity with version control (GitHub, GitLab), good verbal and written communication skills, and fluency in English are also beneficial.
