As part of the R&D organization of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Materials & Structural Analysis division, Digital group is committed to bring groundbreaking software solutions to support our customers success.
The Digital Team is a multi-site group divided over multiple sites in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Bordeaux (France), Hillsboro (US), Brno (Czech).
In material science our teams consist of around 120 software engineers, responsible for end-user application software for (TEM) Transmission Electron Microscopes and especially around data acquisition and processing.

Transmission electronic microscopes are the most outstanding laboratory instruments that are used today. Our software applications are essential into exploiting all the potential of these microscopes, pushing the limits of current physical technologies. These applications are used by scientists and engineers in life science, material sciences and semiconductor industry, indirectly affecting our life in many aspects. By improving these applications, your contribution will help to develop better vaccines, new lighter and stronger materials, or more efficient semiconductors.
Examples are automated tomography, single particle acquisition, and our semiconductors automated metrology/measurements at nanometer scale.
How will you make an impact?
We have a position for a Software Engineer in the Digital applications group in Bordeaux, for one of our key software library project.
Part of our team, you will be responsible to own the our main imaging contribution platform, which is a key library to enable users to explore specimen, run experiments and interpret results.
Including innovation and exploration projects, the whole team is involved in the full software development cycle of new features, product improvement and maintenance of the application. Your work can even lead to new patents!
Expected qualifications includes ability to collaborate with other software scrum teams from different background, provide comprehensive technical designs based on complex functional requirement, and approach issues with solid problem solving skills.
How will you get there?
The ideal candidate for this position enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary technical environment to address sophisticated technical problems. The successful candidate possesses the following combination of education and experience:
- Typically requires MSc, PDEng or PhD in computer science, software engineering, system engineering, or equivalent.
- 5+ years of applicable experience in a multidisciplinary high-tech development environment.
- Ability to handle diverse objectives and problems where analysis of situation or data requires an evaluation of identifiable factors.
- Team spirit and excellent interpersonal communicational skills.
- Strong analytical view combined with pragmatic mentality.
- You dare to take initiative, you are curious and fast learning.
Qualified candidates should have experience programming using the following languages and techniques:
- Object Oriented design and State Modeling
- C++ (11/14/17) and STL/Boost in a multithreading context
Excellent interpersonal communications skills are required due to the high degree of interaction and collaboration (multi-site). Good knowledge of English both written and verbal is a must have in this context.
