Job Description:The eScience Center at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) develops and operates large-scale e-Infrastructures dedicated to research in all fields. The center is a Danish national provider hosting national supercomputing facilities and collaborates closely with other Danish universities.The Center is expanding its staff in one of its core areas. We expect to fill 1 position: the successful candidate will become part of the SDU front-office user support at the eScience center. This unit currently consists of three employees with long expertise in scientific research, programming and software engineering.Our mission is to support research by the development of advanced ICT infrastructure, by providing support and expertise to researchers. The key areas of the center are: High Performance Computing, Cloud Services, Data Analytics and Data Management Services. We assist a large research community, educational and government institutions, as well as commercial companies. In the past five years, the center has developed a user-friendly and advanced private cloud system called UCloud, which is the core of the DeiC national system for interactive HPC and cloud computing.We address stimulating new technological challenges. The SDU eScience center offers a research-like environment where we encourage the study of innovative solutions and personal growth. We firmly believe in open-source and web technology as means to reach our goals.Job description:
We seek experts in the following areas:

  • research user support,
  • parallel computing (MPI, OpenMP, GPU, etc.)
  • cloud computing,
  • container and virtualization technology,
  • database systems,
  • software development for data analytics and HPC,
  • data engineering,
  • data management,
  • machine learning and AI,
  • big data analytics.

Experience in at least two of the above areas is required, and candidates with previous experience in research user support will be strongly preferred.Research user support includes, but it is not limited to: providing specialist skills in parallel computing and data science; porting existing codes to new platforms; designing and developing new software from scratch; set up and tune data analysis workflows; assist researchers in all aspects of data management; develop and deliver tutorials and workshops.Required qualifications:

  • Proven experience in at least two of the areas specified in the job description;
  • A strong understanding of research methodologies;
  • Broad range of software skills in the relevant areas such as: knowledge of distributed computing technologies, GPU programming, scientific software design, scientific workflow tools, interactive data analysis, cloud computing, data management technologies, relational database programming and complex systems debugging;
  • Strong background in Linux systems;
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., in C/C++, shell scripting, MATLAB, Julia, Scala, Spark, Python or R);
  • Proven ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. This requires balancing divergent objectives involving research, code development, supporting software and consulting with scientists;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English in order to interact efficiently with researchers, to provide support for writing research applications to secure funding, and to be able to produce written documentation and materials for training;
  • A high degree of flexibility and the ability to multitask;
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field of science or engineering.

Other relevant qualifications (not required):

  • PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering;
  • Experience with devops practices (e.g. git and github, continuous integration and deployment, software documentation)
