Offer DescriptionApplications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Civil Engineering.This research seeks to investigate the challenges associated with 3D printing of concrete (3DCP). These can occur during extrusion of 3DCP (e.g. control of microcracks from material shrinkage, setting, and hydration etc) as well as issues related to nozzle clogging in the presence of fibre reinforcement. To address these challenges, optimization of steel fibres in conventional 3DCP mixes is required. Comprehensive tests are needed to evaluate the performance of optimized 3DCP mixes in both fresh and hardened states. The assessing factors include rheology, slump, buildability, crack control, compressive, and flexural strength. The resulting optimized 3DCP mix with steel fibres is expected to exhibit enhanced crack resistance, structural integrity, reduced material slumping, and increased design flexibility for complex and customized shapes. Subsequently, prototypes created using the optimized 3DCP mix will undergo evaluation. Through systematic optimization, the project aims to determine the optimal dosage and length of steel fibres to meet the requirements of 3DCP with improved material performance within the Irish construction sector. Thus, by tackling challenges related to material properties and performance, the project aims to advance and promote the adoption of 3DCP in construction, both domestically and globally.Salary Range: €44,847 – €47,412 Per Annum
