The position is initially for two years with potential for extension pending further funding.Purpose of the roleWorking closely with researchers in IERC and the MaREI Research Ireland Research Centre the role will focus on the experimental evaluation of the operation of future offshore floating wind/hydrogen hybrid systems using the state-of-the-art co-simulation testbed under development at the Lir Laboratory at the National Ocean Test Facility, Beaufort Building, MaREI, UCC.What we offer

The successful candidate would also be expected to participate in IERC’s research activities, contribute to the bid and proposal activity for new funding and engage in a variety of internal and external facing activities.Key Responsibilities
- Lead research, development and integration activities associated with the development of laboratory scale hydrogen and Power Hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) hardware at/with the Lir Laboratory, Beaufort Building, University College Cork.
- To be a thought leader and proactively generate research initiatives and ideas.
- Managing the delivery of technical tasks and work packages on a number of IERC research projects as appropriate, including supervising junior team members including Masters and PhD students.
- Providing the technical and project management capability that underpins the research project coordination function for all phases of IERC research projects, including development, delivery and closeout, budget management and resource management to enhance and deliver the requirements of the funding body.
- Anticipate and highlight potential innovation opportunities that meet and grow the strategic needs of the centre and Tyndall National Institute.
- Initiate and take ownership in research grant proposal writing for EU, SFI and other funding streams.
- To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group, such as outreach activities.
- To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and have a role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction including, when appropriate, acting as primary academic supervisor.
- To carry out administrative work to assist the programme of research as necessary.
- To initiate, enforce and comply with UCC and Tyndall’s health and safety and quality policies.
- Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
- A PhD in Electrical or Energy Engineering
- Proven track record of research publications
- Cover letter should clearly demonstrate research expertise in at least two of the following areas:
- Power system network modelling and analysis
- Energy system modelling
- Integration and optimisation of Distributed Energy Resources, including energy storage
- Integrating hydrogen or long duration storage into the electrical power system,
- Power Hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL), prototype development or any real-time controlling platform (OPAL-RT) in the areas listed above.
- Development of laboratory scale hydrogen hardware in research environments.
- Demonstrated experience using design and modelling tools such as Matlab, SPS/PSIM/Open DSS/IPSA/DigSilent or other energy system simulation tools
- Evidence of high levels of initiative and self-starter.
- Flexibility to travel
- Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills
- Experience in managing research projects.
Desirable Criteria
- Previous project management experience
- Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Previous experience in managing and supervising postgraduate students
- Research experience in a University/Research Institute/Industry
- Presentations at conferences
- Evidence of professional experience working with industry and demonstrating an understanding of industry needs
- Previous experience in report writing for research projects.

Further information on the IERC is available atAppointment may be made on the Post-Doctorate Researcher Scale, with a salary range of €44,847 – €51,313 or the Senior Post-Doctorate Researcher Scale with a salary range of €51,677 – €56,203. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with the public sector pay policy.
