ESRI’s leading, policy-informing research spans twelve research areas, in a highly collaborative approach with government agencies, academic institutions and international organisations to address the most pressing issues of our time.The ESRI’s vision is to be a world class research institute, reflecting its commitment to research excellence, integrity, and innovation in every endeavour, to make a meaningful impact on society through high-quality research.The Council of the ESRI is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader to take on the role of Director/Chief Executive Officer to drive forward its impact on public policy and society. Reporting to the Council of the ESRI, the Director will be responsible for the overall leadership of the Institute, enhancing its excellent reputation, promoting its development, and ensuring its financial sustainability. Working as an ex-officio member of the Council, the Director will shape and deliver the Institute’s strategic direction, maintain a culture of excellence, and represent the ESRI in various public and policy forums. They will prepare and lead the implementation of the Institute’s research strategy founded on its independence and commitment to excellence, secure funding, engage with and build stakeholder relationships, and uphold the Institute’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. The Director will also oversee the Institute’s compliance with statutory requirements, and lead the professional development of its people.The ideal candidate will be ambitious for the Institute’s future, an experienced leader with a strong background in research and research management and will demonstrate:

  • Academic credibility and a proven track record of high-quality publications and successful research grant applications;
  • Extensive experience in strategic planning and execution;
  • Excellent leadership and management capabilities, with the ability to inspire, motivate and develop a diverse team;
  • Financial acumen and the capacity to create and deliver a sustainable, strategic financial future for the ESRI;
  • A deep understanding of the Irish public policy environment and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders;
  • A commitment to the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to represent the ESRI in public and policy forums.
