Offer DescriptionThe Institute of Rural Development and Agriculture of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IRWiR PAN) is a category A scientific unit that has been conducting interdisciplinary social research related to rural areas for over 50 years. IRWiR PAN researchers conduct basic and developmental scientific research and implement national and international research and implementation projects (including those under the EU Horizon framework programs). IRWiR PAN employees, as experts and advisors to public sector institutions, participate in the formulation and evaluation of agricultural policy, rural development policy, regional development policy, and other public policies. The Institute conducts extensive international cooperation, offering opportunities to implement international projects, study visits and internships at foreign institutions. The Institute is the seventh scientific unit in the country to be awarded HR Excellence in Research. More information is available on the Institute’s website:IRWiR PAN is seeking an Assistant Professor in Economics, Finance, Forestry, or Agriculture.Number of job posts: 1Terms of employment: full-time employment contract, for 12 months with the possibility of extension into a permanent/ an indefinite-period contract.Planned start of employment: October 1, 2025 (with the possibility of postponing the starting date, but no later than 3 months).Place of work: IRWiR PAN, 72 Nowy Świat St., 00-330 Warsaw (Staszic Palace).The monthly salary is regulated by Article 91a of the Polish Academy of Sciences Act. Work in projects financed from external funding sources is additionally remunerated under the project funding.Tasks:

  • Participation in basic and development research conducted at the Institute
  • Conducting own research
  • Applying for research projects
  • Disseminating the results of scientific work through scientific publications and presentations of research results at conferences and seminars
  • Systematically working towards scientific development, including activities aimed at obtaining a postdoctoral degree, with the active support of the Institute’s scientific community
  • Involvement in the broadly understood organisational activities of the Institute (e.g., organisation of scientific, popular science, and educational events)
  • Participation in the internal scientific life of the Institute (seminars, reviews, co-mentoring of doctoral students and junior researchers)
  • Developing national and international scientific cooperation, including participation in research consortia, thematic networks, and exchange programmes

  • PhD/ Doctoral degree in economics and finance or forestry or agriculture
  • Knowledge of English at a level not lower than B2
  • Very good command of Polish, both spoken and written
  • Interest in socio-economic changes in agriculture and rural areas, confirmed by publications and/or project experience
  • Publications in scientific journals and/or monographs and/or collective works
  • Ability to work in a team and good work organisation
  • Independence and responsibility for assigned tasks
  • Communication skills, creativity, availability, and excellent manners

Specific Requirements

  • Organisational experience in the implementation of research, implementation, and/or training projects, confirmed by a list of completed projects and a statement on the role played in the project
  • Experience in cooperation with business, local government, public institutions and non-governmental organisations will be a significant advantage
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and inference methods
  • Experience in evaluating public programmes and policies
  • Experience in conducting surveys, polls and interviews

Eligibility criteriaWhen applying for the job position, the following documents should be submitted:

  • A statement of education with a copy of your master’s degree and a copy of your doctoral degree,
  • A cover letter containing the following information: name and surname, date of birth, contact details, research interests, and a proposal for a research topic that could be pursued at the Institute, indicating whether the candidate is interested in full-time employment or exclusively or alternatively part-time employment,
  • A statement that, if successful in the competition, IRWiR PAN will be the candidate’s primary place of employment,
  • A statement on the course of professional work, detailing scientific activity (projects, conferences, internships), teaching and organisational activity,
  • Copies of the most important publications (up to 10 items),
  • A statement of qualifications with copies of documents confirming the information contained in the statement (e.g., English language certificate, awards, distinctions).

Selection processThe competition will be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the Competition Committee will formally evaluate the submitted applications and make a preliminary assessment of the candidates based on the correctly submitted documents. Selected candidates will be invited to an interview, which will constitute the second stage of the competition and will take place in person at the IRWiR PAN headquarters (ul. Nowy Świat 72, 00-330 Warsaw, Staszic Palace).
