2025_8_114 – A scientific software developer in gravitational wave physics

Company:

Job description

Offer DescriptionThe Institute of Applied Computing and Community Code (IAC3, ) is seeking scientific software developers to join our team and contribute to computational activities within the Veni research program (Veni.222.396) supported by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).The successful candidate will play a key role in developing software packages used for numerical relativity simulations, modelling gravitational wave sources and data analysis from gravitational wave interferometers. The position offers the chance to directly support the scientific goals of the Veni research programme, focused on maximising the science output of current and future gravitational wave experiments, such as the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detectors, the next generation ground-based detector Einstein Telescope and the LISA space mission, where the IAC3 GRAVITY group is closely involved.Main responsibilities:

  • Implement and optimise algorithms for data processing, waveform modelling and parameter estimation in line with best practice in software engineering
  • Ensure all software is well-documented to facilitate easy onboarding for new group members and external collaborators
  • Actively contribute to data analysis efforts and scientific publications produced in the context of the Veni research project (Veni.222.396), leveraging developed software to advance gravitational wave science.

About IAC3 and the GRAVITY group: IAC3 is an interdisciplinary research centre home to over 60 researchers from six consolidated research groups within the departments of physics, mathematics and computer science at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Research in the context of the Veni research programme (Veni.222.396) focuses on numerical relativity, waveform modelling and gravitational-wave data analysis. The group has access to its own high-performance computing cluster, as well as to external resources such as the MareNostrum supercomputer and the LIGO Data Grid. Moreover, it is an active member of leading international collaborations. The group comprises PIs Alicia Sintes and Sascha Husa, and faculty members David Keitel, Xisco Jiménez-Forteza, Antoni Ramos, Pep Covas and Jaume Carot, as well as several post-doctoral researchers and PhD students. For further details see .PI: Dr. Antoni Ramos BuadesFunding body: Dutch Research CouncilInstitution: Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) / University of the Balearic Islands (UIB)Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Astronomy » Astrophysics Education Level Bachelor Degree or equivalentSkills/QualificationsA Degree in Physics with an average mark above 8 out of 10 on candidates’ degree transcriptSpecific RequirementsEssential skills:
