The Water Resources strategy team is responsible for creating the WRMP, Drought Management Plan and
supporting the WINEP investigation delivery. They will be the guiding mind for our 50-year strategy
and help to shape the investment cases for long term water resource options for the operating
regions. We are looking for an Abstraction Strategy Manager to join us on a full
time permanent basis with a salary of £52,000 per annum plus amazing benefits.
As Abstraction Strategy Manager you will drive the development and implementation
of strategic plans and initiatives as part of the Water Industry National Environment Programme
(WINEP), aligning with national environmental objectives and priorities, covering the South West
Water, Bristol Water, Bournemouth Water and Isles of Scilly regions.
Your role will be crucial in helping our team make important decisions and working closely with
others both inside and outside the organization. You’ll need to be a recognised industry figure in
water resource management, and you’ll use your skills to come up with new ideas, strategies and
implementable plans for Abstractions and WINEP planning. You will make sure we are following
regulation and industry best practise.
What you’ll be doing:
- You will provide technical advice to Water Industry National Environmental Programme
(WINEP) delivery, reviewing and assessing the impacts of investigations, considering
overall impact on future resource needs. - You will be the group lead on Environmental Destination Impact Assessments; being
involved in the planning, execution, and monitoring of relevant projects. - You will provide specialist water resource advice and support to internal and external
stakeholders to ensure compliance with policies, legislation, and best practices. - You will lead negotiations with regulatory bodies such as the Environment Agency and
Natural England to obtain project approvals and protect company assets and ensuring
regulatory oversight. - You will develop long-term investigation programs to inform future WINEP water resource
obligations, in consultation with internal stakeholders and regulatory agencies. - You will undertake proactive reviews of abstraction licences to inform strategic
adjustments to these licences and the operational execution of them. - You will lead negotiations with the Environment Agency to secure new abstraction
licences or existing licence renewals. - You will collaborate with relevant teams across the Function and Wider Group to gather
inputs from hydrological modelling, supply system modelling, and climate change impact
assessments enabling you to forecast future water supplies accurately. - Collaborate with engineering teams to assess and prioritize water infrastructure
projects, such as reservoirs, treatment plants, and distribution systems, to meet future
water demands and enhance system resilience. - You will be involved in preparation of company annual reviews, drawing insights from
across the business to evaluate performance against the Water Resources Management Plan
(WRMP) and setting water resource-related targets in collaboration with price review
teams. You will review analysis on water supply and demand dynamics, assessing risks, and
identifying opportunities to enhance the sustainability and resilience of our water
resources.
What we are looking for:
- Scientific/Environmental/Hydrology related degree
- Experience in developing Abstraction or Water Resource Management strategies and
evidence of ability to undertake periodic reviews against established strategies. - Experience in the securing and review of abstraction licenses.
- Experience in water resources management, hydrology or related fields
- Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including internal teams,
contractors, regulators, landowners, and local authorities - Experience in navigating regulatory frameworks and obtaining approvals from regulatory
bodies such as the Environment Agency and Natural England - Track record of successfully managing and delivering water resource projects, including
planning, budgeting, and reporting
