Information Services Division (ISD) is the primary provider of IT services to UCL. We support and enhance learning, teaching, research and administrative processes by providing information- and technology-related services to over 50,000 staff and students of UCL and associated institutions.

Our goal is to be the top IT services group in the HE sector and we are growing our team’s capability in experience/UX, agile development, security, cloud, service management and partnering. We are modernising our technology foundations, digitising the processes of the university to transform experience for students and staff, and partnering across the university to drive differentiation in UCL education and research.

Faculty IT & Partnering provides local specialist applications and systems support and IT strategic business partnering for users in the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS), in the Institute of Education (IOE), the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and to departments in the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Sciences and Laws (SLASH).

As an Applications & System Manager (for Linux applications) within Faculty IT & Partnering, you will provide innovative technical leadership to the group within medical sciences and will lead on high-priority complex work delivering maximum value to both teaching and research. You’ll manage technical problems through to resolution focussing on analytical and logical methodologies as well as advise and support team members in delivery and operational environments that adapts to changing technologies for continuous improvement.

Your responsibilities will involve the following:

• Providing creative input, you will be responsible for the implementation of IT solutions and the leadership of project’s technical implementation team, including any detailed design activities
• Capitalise on internal Information Services offerings and externally provided platforms where possible, while supporting bespoke services where necessary to deliver benefits to Medical Sciences
• Act as the escalation point for the Faculty IT Support and Applications & Systems Specialists
• Provide cover for the IT Service Manager by attending meetings and acting as the escalation point when required

As a System Administrator/ Engineer, you have a background managing Linux systems in an enterprise environment using RHEL, CentOS or Ubuntu and in-depth knowledge of web server technologies and shell scripting (python, bash, powershell etc) for automation purposes. You have an ability to manage problems through to resolution, with a strong eye for detail and accuracy along with an aptitude for analytical and logical methodologies. Additionally, you’re comfortable using your Linux expertise to advise and support colleagues in their technical activities in both delivery and operational environments, with an ability to adapt to changing technologies.
