The Role:
The Assistant Conservation Ranger is a funded placement until December 2025, funded by Species
Survival fund, for the chance to gain experience working alongside our Smithills Estate team.
The role will help deliver nature recovery around the wet woodland, rainforest and surrounding
habitats. There is further information on the Rainforest Restoration Project is listed in the
Job Description.
The types of activities you might be involved in include:
- Supporting the Site Manager, Assistant Site Manager and Volunteers on practical day to day
tasks, including woodland creation, restoration and flood management - Support the Engaging Communities Officer in delivering events on site.
- Supporting the Habitat Restoration planning and implementation work.
- Assist the Events and Communications Officer in creating content for our three social media
channels. - The chance to bring your own ideas and perspectives to the placement.
This is a site-based role at Smithills, Bolton. The role will have a dedicated desk space and all necessary equipment.
The Candidate:
You will have:
- An interest in learning practical woodland management skills
- An interest in engaging with people and communities
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- An interest in learning and developing new ideas, working with others to bring them to life
- Experience of using Microsoft Word and email with the ability to use IT and learn new tools
with support - Good attention to detail
- A passion for the environment
You will be:
- Organised and able to pick up new skills quickly
- Able to build relationships with people easily
- Able to work independently and as part of a team

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
- Introduction to Woodland Management, learning practical skills and core principles
- Introduction to Communications and Engagement, volunteer leader training and learn how to
carry out risk assessments for events and activities - Gain environmental knowledge
Additional Requirements:
- You’ll be aged between 18 – 25 years old (up to 30 for those with a neurodisability)
- You’ll be based near our Smithills Estate
- You must be willing to undergo a DBS check
