Specifically, we will attempt to provide novel evidence for the role of collectives and singulatives in grammar by exploring their form and meaning across languages. The project will explore the following empirical domains: (i) the morphology and semantics of collectives and singulatives, (ii) different functions of collectives and singulatives and (iii) interactions between collectives and singulatives and other morphosyntactic and semantic categories. It will seek to identify universal properties that would justify decomposing the meaning of collectives and singulatives into primitive semantic components whose various configurations would account for their various functions. The expected outcome of the project will be a contribution to the general linguistic debate on the role of collectives and singulatives in grammar. The project aims to combine Nanosyntax, i.e., a realizational post-syntactic model of morphology based on late insertion, with explicit compositional semantics, which will be grounded in mereotopology, i.e., a formal theory of parts and wholes that captures both the part-whole relation and spatial configurations of entities. In terms of empirical methodology, the project will utilize the Terraling database, which is a cutting-edge digital resource for cross-linguistic data elicitation. From a typological perspective, the project will focus mainly on Slavic (with an emphasis on East Slavic and especially Ukrainian), Germanic, Celtic, Romance, Semitic and Nilo-Saharan.Detailed information on the project can be obtained from the PI, dr Marcin Wągiel, e-mail address:Formal requirements: * The candidate (i) should have the doctoral degree awarded by a different institution than the one where the employment and/or (ii) was employed as a postdoctoral researcher for at least 10 months at another institution outside Poland.
