The Department of Economics at the University of Southampton is inviting applications for the role of Associate Professor. While we are open to applications from all fields of economics, we are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong orientation towards policy-relevant, applied economics.

The University of Southampton holds a position in the top 1% of universities worldwide and is acknowledged as one of the UK’s premier research-intensive universities. Our Economics Department has established itself through consistent research in both applied and theoretical dimensions in all principal areas of Economics. Our research is organized across four interconnected groups, namely applied economics, econometrics, economic theory/experimental economics, and macroeconomics. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), our department received high ratings, particularly noting our research environment, impact initiatives, and the quality of our research outputs.

The successful candidate will assume a role with significant responsibilities, including leading initiatives within their field of expertise, particularly if it aligns with applied economics, and furthering the Department’s strategic interests. This entails cultivating a purposeful research program with an emphasis on policy relevance, achieving publications in respected journals, driving grant applications, engaging in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, guiding Masters and PhD students, and contributing to the administrative functions of the Department.

If your professional aspirations align with blending economic theory with hands-on, policy-oriented research, and you are prepared to make meaningful contributions in the realm of economics, we welcome your application.

Successful applicants should have a PhD in Economics or an equivalent qualification and be able to satisfy all the essential criteria detailed in the job description. The successful candidate will be expected to start in April 2024 but a later starting date may be negotiable.
