UCL is one of the UK’s premier universities and is ranked in the world’s top 10. It is a world-class research and teaching institution based in London whose staff and former students have included 29 Nobel Prize winners. Founded in 1826, it was the only university in England at that time which admitted students regardless of race or religion. UCL was also the first to admit women on equal terms with men. Today, UCL is an inspiring university in which to work and study and it continues to thrive on the diversity and creativity of its community.

UCL has 840 professors and more than 6,000 academic and research staff who are dedicated to research and teaching of the highest standards (HESA 2013).

About the Department of Economics
The Chair of Political Economy at UCL was created in 1827 in memory of David Ricardo, thus establishing the first Department of Economics in England. The department of Economics has an outstanding international reputation in key areas of current research. It is the only department of economics in the UK to have received the outstanding grade-point average of 3.78 (out of 4) in the 2014 REF with 79% of all indicators of output rated at the highest 4* level.

According to the grade point average (GPA) on the overall score, the REF 2014 has ranked the Department of Economics at UCL as:
• the top Department in the UK in the field of Economics and Econometrics
• the top Department at UCL, and
• the top Department in any field in any university in the UK

This is an extraordinarily positive outcome which documents the Department’s outstanding quality in Research. It is the fruit of many years hard work aimed at producing a world leading Department excelling in producing frontier-shifting and policy relevant research.

The department offers a number of undergraduate degree programmes, a vigorous undergraduate affiliate student programme, Masters programmes in Economics and Data Science with Public Policy, and a structured MPhil/PhD programme.

The Department of Economics at UCL is a medium-sized department by UK standards with a regular academic staff of 50, but it is supplemented with full-time research staff and part-time teaching fellows plus an active programme of academic visitors. There are currently over 1000 undergraduates and more than 150 graduate students studying in the department. Further information about the Department of Economics is available from the department’s website at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/economics/
