About the role

The University of Derby is looking to appoint a confident and self-motivated Business Accounting Support Assistant to join the Business Accounting Support Team on a permanent basis.

Reporting into one of the Business Accountants the successful applicant will be part of a vibrant, professional team. Under the guidance of the Business Accountant, you will provide reporting, forecasting, budgeting, and support for a defined project portfolio. 

The role involves liaising with colleagues across the business to ensure robust and effective financial project management, so excellent communication skills are essential.

There will be opportunities to work with members across the finance department, and also the wider University; as such the role would suit an individual looking to gain experience of a business partnering approach to financial management.

This post will be 20 hours a week split across 4 days (preferred pattern but this is negotiable)

Principal accountabilities

  • To facilitate project set up, monitoring and operation by reference to the project details and timelines and in liaison with the business and project managers.
  • To provide project information to Business Accountants and Budget Managers as required.
  • To support Project Managers through timely and accurate provision of budgetary control information including budget summaries and reconciliations.
  • To ensure all invoices, for projects and other activity, are raised as required.
  • To collect HESA and other institutional reporting requirements in a timely manner, and ensure coding is appropriate for capturing this information.
  • Under the guidance of the Business Accountant, to phase, enter and collect project information for month end, forecast and budget.
  • Provide support for year end and audit preparations and for project specific audits by providing all required backing information to deadlines.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy in all outputs and provide a flexible approach to delivering deadlines.
  • Develop and sustain high quality relationships with colleagues across the finance department and wider institution.
  • Be fully aware of the health and safety responsibilities for you.
  • Promote and exemplify the University’s values.
  • Carry out any other duties or projects commensurate with the level and skills/qualifications of this role.
  • Be an active and engaged member of the Business Accounting team.

  • Business Accountant and other senior Finance colleagues.

    Essential Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Educated to “A” level standard or equivalent work experience.
    • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/ L4 or above or equivalent qualification.

    Experience

    • Experience of working in a busy Finance office environment.
    • Demonstrable experience in finance or relevant finance qualification.
    • Evidence of working with and following financial procedures.

    Skills, knowledge & abilities

    • Strong Excel skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong customer focus and service delivery achievements.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to build positive and supportive relationships.
    • Reconciliation and financial reporting skills.

    Business requirements

    • Flexible approach to working hours when occasion demands.

    Desirable Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Willingness to work towards professional body accreditation, either for an accountancy qualification (e.g. AAT or CIMA) or another relevant professional qualification, via the apprenticeship route if appropriate.
