Carbon Capture Engineer

Parallel Carbon

vacanciesin.eu

About Us:

Parallel Carbon is developing the hardware platform fundamental to a post-fossil fuel society.
We are building technology that removes carbon dioxide from the air while producing hydrogen to
eliminate emissions. Our mission is to deliver the world’s most scalable solution to reversing
climate change.

Our process delivers cost-effective carbon management by combining geomimicry with
electrochemistry. Many of Earth’s minerals (and organic matter) readily sequester CO2, but
these systems are too limited by speed or scale to handle the excessive amounts of CO2 humans
are injecting into the air. Parallel Carbon enhances and accelerates ancient mineral reactions
with modern electrochemical processing to solve the speed and scale challenge.

We are just beginning our journey, but great things are coming for us. Last year, Hello
Tomorrow shortlisted Parallel Carbon as one of the 70 companies that will change the world. In
December, we closed a $3.6 million investment to scale our technology and begin delivering
climate benefits to our customers.

Over the coming decades, we will remove atmospheric CO2 at the gigaton scale; all that is
missing is you. Join us to accelerate climate action. Come reduce and remove carbon, in
Parallel.

About the Role:

Parallel Carbon is searching for an enthusiastic and experienced Carbon Capture Engineer
motivated to reverse climate change and help us scale our technology. You will lead the
development and optimisation of our carbon capture process, preparing for scale-up efforts. The
ideal candidate will have expertise in reaction engineering, multi-phase fluid modelling and
handling, chemical process design and safety and environmental compliance. You will play a
crucial role in accelerating technology development and Parallel Carbon’s impact. The position
is in Manchester, UK.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the research, design and optimisation of carbon capture and mineral handling processes
to support the development of our carbon capture technology
  • Prepare and refine processes for large-scale production ensuring their seamless integration
    during scale-up efforts
  • Apply expertise in engineering to enhance the efficiency and productivity of all chemical
    processes
  • Conduct process simulations and modelling to evaluate the performance and feasibility of
various chemical reactions and processes, identifying areas for improvement
  • Conduct experiments to validate reaction chemistry, process design and assess the
performance upon integration with other processes
  • Design and oversee the selection, sourcing, construction, installation, and operation of
equipment, including reactors, pumps, and control systems at a laboratory and pilot plant scale
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team, including material scientists, electrochemists,
and other engineers to troubleshoot and develop innovative solutions
  • Perform data analysis and interpretation to identify trends, patterns, and deviations in
process parameters, and implement corrective actions as necessary
  • Prepare technical reports, white papers, and presentations to communicate results and
progress to the team and stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs),
    technical specifications, and engineering drawings
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and process improvements, including from interviews
and literature reviews, to continuously improve Parallel Carbon’s technology
  • Implement and adhere to stringent safety and environmental regulations to ensure the
responsible and sustainable development of our technology
  • Maintain the highest standards of safety through effective process design and proper
handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials to prevent potential harm to employees
    and the environment
  • Bring a passion to fight climate change, and develop a company culture of inclusive
    innovation valuing sustainable work

Requirements

According to studies, skilled people from marginalised backgrounds may pass on opportunities if
they don’t tick all the boxes for a job. If you feel that you have what it takes, but aren’t
perfectly qualified, please go ahead and apply!

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related
    field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial research setting, developing and
optimising processes with a focus on process scale-up.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in a pilot plant, manufacturing environment, or other
industrial setting, with a strong understanding of chemical process design, unit operations,
    and equipment
  • Previous industry experience in cement or concrete, paints and coatings, minerals and
mining, pharmaceutical production, food processing, carbon capture or a related field
  • Knowledge of chemical reaction engineering, thermodynamics including solid-gas reactions,
material drying, fluid mechanics, mass transfer, and process control
  • Knowledge of CAD and process simulation software (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, Dyssol, Aspen Plus)
and familiarity with languages such as MATLAB, Python, or similar
  • Ability to develop safe and economical process for multiphase material handling and
    separation
  • Strong ability to analyse and solve complex technical problems related to process design,
    root cause analysis, and optimization
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to present ideas, design
    specifications, and progress updates
  • Experience managing solo and team projects, setting project goals, and ensuring project
    timelines and budgets are met

If you are passionate about fighting climate change, developing and optimising chemical
processes, and have a strong track record of delivering results, we encourage you to apply.
