Chemist – Failure Analysis

For our laboratory based in Tournus (71), we are actively looking for R&D Failure Analysis Chemist to support and manage the root cause of coatings manufacturing, coating application, package fabrication, or package performance problems. Using forensic analysis techniques and other laboratory work, the successful candidate will support all Sherwin-Williams Division across the EMEAI region by conducting problem investigations, identifying root causes, and recommending resolutions. The successful candidate will be part of the analytical and material sciences team composed of 12 members.

  • Determine the root cause of product defects and performance failures with coatings commercially applied to metal substrates, fabricated into can components and packed with product.
  • Implement new technic such as SEM/EDX for problem solving investigation and become the referent of the technic.
  • Develop new test methods and procedures to enable root cause determination.
  • Become an expert for trouble shooting regarding all coating technologies, including necessary sample preparation, microscopy and analytical techniques.
  • Act as a technical resource for all problem-solving activities across the globe. 
  • Interact and build relationships with Technical, Manufacturing, Sales, Customer Service, Quality and external customers on regular basis.
  • Communicate results and conclusions to the organization and customers.
  • Carry out all activities needed in a problem investigation.
  • Be an active member of the SW global problem solving team.
  • Have potential to supervise technicians and other professionals in the future.
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in analytical Science, Engineering or Chemical field,
  • 5 to 10 years of professional experience in related analytical techniques such as optical and laser scanning confocal microscopy, FTIR, SEM, … & related sample preparation techniques,
  • 5 years in organic coating development, or in metal packaging (Technical Service or similar), or in forensic examination of materials,
  • High motivation and leadership skills,
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers both verbally and in written form (French and English).
