Your impact

As a Senior Business Analyst within the CPMO, you will work on projects that are developing and evolving our transformation journey in line with our Strategic Framework. You will work collaboratively with the University’s leadership teams and colleagues to ensure that the University of Derby can transition from its current state to a future state that aligns with institutional ambitions. You will work with transformation principles and target statements that are enabling the University to realise the high-quality outcomes and benefits associated with the future state. 

We need your expertise in:

  • Interpreting customer requirements, planning work and managing expectations as a Business Analyst.
  • Building multi-system, multi-function process maps and workflows for processes.
  • Getting to the root cause of business issues and supporting senior leaders and team members in finding the future state/solution to the issues.
  • Ability to work independently, delivering the Business Analyst activity to the agreed standard.

Principal accountabilities

  • Provide a high quality, effective business analysis service from initial concept, requirements gathering, benefits identification, business approval, and project initiation, through to testing, training, and embedding.
  • Conduct feasibility studies where needed, contribute to the business case, identify solution options that meet business needs, and estimate the potential value that could be realised for key solution option.
  • Lead on reviewing the existing “as is” end to end business processes and systems usage and develop the “to be” processes, and workflows to improve business performance.
  • Define and document functional and non-functional requirements and design information conducting detailed analysis to produce business requirement documentation, user stories, product backlog items, operational specifications, process diagrams/flows and new operating procedures.
  • Work effectively with the Programme/Project Manager and colleagues across the University to ensure the identified areas are clearly defined, exploit existing assets where possible
  • Work with IT colleagues in being the “bridge” between technical requirements and business needs, especially in the API space and general data transfer and cleansing activity.
  • Organise and run workshops, walk-throughs, and reviews with internal and external stakeholders
  • Presenting solutions and options for debate and discussion, negotiating with business colleagues and leaders
  • Work with IT colleagues and support with testing from a technical and user perspective
  • Work with the Programme/Project Manager and business leads in undertaking User acceptance testing, from helping to write scripts (if necessary), undertake testing and provide updates on testing results, where necessary coach users on UAT activity.
  • Work with suppliers, IT colleagues and business colleagues in understanding the system administration activity and if applicable the cloud-based responsibilities of the business functions during the life of the project so they can be self-sufficient after the project has closed.
  • When required perform impact analysis on project change requests.
  • Provide detail to the Programme/Project Manager on emerging issues and risks based on their analysis and support in defining options to resolve issues and mitigate risks where possible.
  • Identify, develop, and implement change activities to ensure successful and effective rollout and embedding of activity.
  • Take an active role in the development of skills, confidence, training, and ongoing support of key stakeholders.
  • Provide information to contribute to a regular benefit/outcome tracking mechanism in partnership with key stakeholders and in line with CPMO processes to ensure benefit case delivery can be monitored and reviewed.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of work undertaken to enable the Programme/Project Manager to deliver effective reporting mechanisms that provide timely and understandable information in respect of the business analysis delivery for all stakeholders including the Programme/Project Board.
  • Contribute to developing and documenting a Business Analysis Framework that will align to the University of Derby Project Management framework including key processes, templates, ways of working.
  • Mentor the less experienced members of the Portfolio Office team in business analysis activities, ensuring they are delivering effective and consistently high-quality services across the University.

    Essential Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Relevant degree (or equivalent qualification) or comparable knowledge gained through professional experience
    • Professional Business Analysis Qualification, e.g., BCS Diploma in Business Analysis, IIBA

    Experience

    • Significant experience of interpreting customer requirements, planning work and managing expectations as a Business Analyst
    • Experience of successfully managing competing priorities within a resource-limited environment
    • Experience of building multi-system, multi-function process maps and workflows for processes
    • Extensive, applied understanding of Business Analysis functions
    • Experience of developing requirements and acceptance criteria to support testing and sign off processes
    • Comfortable providing support and challenge to senior leaders through the provision of evidence-based insights

    • Experience of delivering workshops via MS Teams and the use of breakout rooms etc.

    Desirable Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Professional Project Management Qualification (e.g., Prince2 or Agile Practitioner)
    • Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement qualification

    Experience

    • Experience working in a Higher Educational Institution
    • Experience with, Tableau, Alteryx and/or Power BI
