Join our dynamic Digital team and play a key role in shaping our future.Role Purpose:We are seeking a proactive and experienced Product Owner for Automation to join our growing Digital team in Leicester. This pivotal role will focus on identifying, evaluating, and driving the implementation of automation initiatives across the business, leveraging process improvements, system changes, and cutting-edge Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques.You will be the crucial link between business stakeholders, IT delivery teams, and our Data Science function, ensuring that automation projects deliver tangible value and efficiency gains. Working closely with and supporting the Head of Data Science, you will help translate complex technical possibilities into clear business objectives and manageable project deliverables within a fast-paced environment.What will you do on a normal day?

  • Identify & Prioritise: Proactively identify opportunities for automation across various business functions, assessing feasibility, potential ROI, and alignment with strategic goals. Develop and own the automation product backlog.
  • Define & Scope: Collaborate with business stakeholders, Digital Business Analysts, and Data Scientists to define clear project objectives, scope, requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for automation initiatives.
  • Project Coordination & Management: Coordinate and manage the end-to-end delivery of automation projects, ensuring they address people, process, and system changes effectively.
  • ML/AI Focus: Work closely with the Head of Data Science and the data science team to champion and integrate ML/AI solutions where appropriate, understanding their potential and limitations within specific business contexts.
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary point of contact for automation initiatives, ensuring clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders, including business users, IT teams, data scientists, and senior management.
  • Collaboration: Foster strong collaborative relationships with Digital Business Analysts, IT development teams, Data Scientists, and operational teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Continuous Improvement: Champion a culture of continuous improvement, using data and feedback to iterate on existing automation solutions and identify further opportunities.
  • Adaptability & Reporting: Monitor project progress and performance, adapting plans and priorities based on learnings and changing business needs. Provide regular, clear updates on progress, risks, and future plans to a wider change steering committee (Steerco) and relevant stakeholders.
  • Change Management: Understand and contribute to the change management process required to successfully embed automation solutions within the business.

What are we looking for?

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or Project Manager with a focus on delivering technology or process improvement projects.
  • Demonstrable experience working on projects involving Machine Learning (ML) and/or Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. A solid understanding of the concepts and practical applications is essential.
  • Experience working within or closely alongside a Data Science function.
  • Strong understanding of how to identify and manage projects involving people, process, and system change components.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences1 and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Exceptional coordination and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive and results-oriented mindset with a strong focus on continuous improvement and driving efficiency.
  • Experience working effectively with Business Analysts to translate needs into actionable requirements.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and make informed decisions based on evolving data and feedback.
  • Experience in reporting progress and plans to governance bodies like steering committees.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban).

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience within the MRO, distribution, e-commerce, or industrial supplies sector.
  • Formal Product Owner or Agile certification (e.g., CSPO, PSPO).
  • Experience with specific automation platforms or RPA tools.
