Job description
Offer DescriptionThe recruitment for 14 months concerns SONATA-16 project no. 2020/39/D/NZ8/01522, entitled “Hybridization as an evolutionary process which reinforces the adaptive potential of tree species in the face of climate changes”, supported by the National Science Centre with the possibility of extension up to 24 months (subject to the extension of the duration of project no. 2020/39/D/NZ8/01522).Principal Investigator: Dr Katarzyna SękiewiczKey words: adaptation, climate change, conservation genomics, evolutionary rescue, hybridization, landscape genomics, whole-genome sequencingProject topics: Climate change is proceeding at an unprecedented rate, which leads to a considerable loss of biodiversity that may disturb the functioning of ecosystems. Forests have considerable potential to mitigate climate changes; however, given the expected rate of these changes, the future of the forests is under great concern. Understanding how species might respond to environmental changes is one of the most pressing questions in evolutionary biology. In this project, we focus on the adaptive genetic variation, which is a key determinant of the evolutionary response of species to climate changes. Specifically, we are going to estimate the possible contribution of interspecific hybridization as a mechanism which reinforces the adaptive potential of tree species to climate changes. Unravelling the underpinnings of evolutionary drivers of adaptive potential of species may result in more realistic and accurate predictions about their response to ongoing climate changes. Hybridization can have theoretically considerable impact on species ability to adapt to varying climates. Nevertheless, whether and how hybridization impacts species range dynamic, especially at the range margins, remains poorly understood. To investigate this topic, we will use whole-genome re-sequencing and integrative approaches which combine population genomics with advanced spatial modelling techniques based on the genetic adaptive variability of tree species. An important innovative component of the project is the inclusion of a genomics modelling approach that can capture adaptive evolutionary response of species and consider the hybridization as a mechanism enhancing this response. Up to now, hybridization has never been incorporated into the predictive models and little is known about the implications of this process in species response to climate change. The project will undoubtedly broaden the rapidly evolving field of landscape genomics, providing data on the role of hybridization in the evolutionary response of tree species to climate change. Understanding the impact of this process has a great potential for forest ecology, management and conservation of genetic diversity of tree species.Tasks for the Post-doc: The candidate will be involved in the following tasks: 1) treatment of genomic data; 2) landscape genomic analyses; 3) dissemination of the obtained results and preparing publications.Conditions of employment: Full-time employment contract.Employment period: 14 months.Application deadline: 12/05/2024.RequirementsResearch Field Biological sciences » Biology Education Level Master Degree or equivalentSkills/Qualifications

- According to the criteria of the National Science Centre (Kraków, Poland), the candidates can be accepted only if they were awarded the PhD degree up to 7 years before employment in the project. This period excludes intervals due to maternity leave, adoption leave, paternity leave, parental leave, or parental care leave, granted according to the principles set out in the Labor Code, or else associated with receiving sickness benefits or disability benefits because of temporary inability to work, including those caused by a disease requiring therapeutic rehabilitation. In the case of women, the above-mentioned 7-year period can be extended with 18 months for each born or adopted child. Women can choose more favorable ways to document the intervals in their scientific career.
