- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in History. The PhD project focusses on the role of women in Informal Cross-Border Trade (ICBT) along the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, from the late 19th century to present. You will use a combination of archival research and oral history interviews.
- You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
- You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for Department of History.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in History, African Studies, Anthropology, Development Studies or a related field, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.

- Preferably, you have previous experience with fieldwork in Central Africa.
- Preferably, you have previous experience with archival research.
- Preferably, you are proficient in English, French and Swahili.
- Preferably, you can demonstrate a broader interest in the region under study and/or women’s studies.
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 2 years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another 2 years.
