Since 2004, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) is IOM’s main operational tool for tracking and monitoring the movements and the evolving needs of displaced populations. It has been systematically deployed in medium to large-scale humanitarian response operations. As of June 2023, the number of countries mobilizing DTM has grown to 100 with over 500 staff engaged on mission projects. Located in the IOM London office, under direct supervision of the DTM Analytics, Knowledge and Output, Quality (AKO) Unit Lead (London, UK)/DTM Lead Editor (London, UK), the successful candidate will integrate into the DTM AKO unit.

The AKO unit of the global DTM support team is tasked with direct support to country and regional offices to ensure that the quality of analytic outputs is maintained in line with the global DTM standards, and are fit for purpose based on the audience and information needs at the country level. The AKO unit is also engaged in exploring the analytic potential of DTM data through thematic work streams including children on the move, climate and natural hazard induced mobility, gender and displacement/migration, urban displacement/migration, data science and ethics, the humanitarian, development and peace nexus.

This internship will be based within the London team and will be focused on supporting the quality control structures for DTM analytic outputs worldwide (analysis and reporting), with a particular focus on Ukraine response, as well as contributing to the global level thematic work streams.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Learning Objectives: 1) DTM Methodologies and Data Collection Approaches Objective: Develop a detailed understanding of the four methodological components of DTM data collection and how they are implemented in the field. Learn how data collection approaches impact the data that is collected and how that data should be analyzed. 2) Data Analysis and Reporting Objective: Become proficient in preparing analysis and drafting reports on operational human mobility data for operational audiences implementing programs. Learn how to prepare advocacy data points for senior management and other audiences. 3) Ukraine Response Context Objective: Develop a detailed understanding of the humanitarian, and post crisis response in Ukraine response countries and how data supports these interventions.

Key Results: To provide operational reporting support to DTM Country and Regional offices – specifically Ukraine Response teams. Common to all interns in the AKO unit: • Provide support in analysis and interpretation of data, as tasked by the DTM AKO unit • If necessary, in coordination with DTM Country Missions provide updates on human mobility trends, changes and any other significant observations surrounding human mobility and displacement in the respective context; • Assist the DTM Country Missions and teams in London in the production and quality control of reporting documents; • Coordinate with other units of the global DTM support team to ensure continuity of functional workflows; • Provide administrative and logistical support to the London team when needed; • Review of DTM documents at the request of DTM country teams and regional teams;; • Assist in the refinement of DTM’s data collection methodologies and questionnaires, identifying good practices and providing recommendations for improvement; • Support technical training of other staff, including through the organization of dedicated webinars; Perform any other tasks as assigned.

TECHNICAL Required • Fluency in English at a working professional level • Proficiency using Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word and PowerPoint) • Experience using data visualization and publication software such as the Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign) • Experience drafting analytic outputs • Experience in quantitative research methods Advantageous • Experience or demonstrable interest in one or more of the global thematic workstreams. • Experience organizing webinars, training sessions and other events • Experience working with R (programming language), including at least three of the following • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS/QGIS • Experience with other coding languages (e.g. Python) and relational databases (inc. SQL) • Experience in qualitative research methods.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution in a field of study related to Economics / Development Economics, Data Science, Political Science, Social Science, Development Studies, Public health, Epidemiology or other relevant disciplines with a significant quantitative component. Alternatively, a bachelor’s/undergraduate degree in the abovementioned fields with demonstrable relevant working experience.

LANGUAGES

Required Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral) Advantageous Fluency in Ukrainian or Russian, and/or other Eastern European languages (written and oral).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants to IOM internships must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or b) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 4.1(a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. 4.2 All applicants must be between 20 and 36 years of age.
