Ifremer

Job description

Les missions du posteClosure date for receipt of applications : 07/05/2025Who are we?DYNECO is an Ifremer laboratory aiming at studying the response of coastal ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances. (https://dyneco.ifremer.fr/en). DYNECO’s pelagic ecology team investigates coastal pelagic ecosystems submitted to climate and human changes. The team brings together some thirty researchers, engineers, technicians and PhD students to work on national and international projects (https://dyneco.ifremer.fr/Qui-sommes-nous/Ecologie-pelagique-PELAGOS/PELAGOS/PROJETS ), drawing on skills in biogeochemistry, molecular biology, ecology and numerical modelling. What will your mission be?We are recruiting an engineer to join our team and be in charge of the development and deployment of deterministic numerical models of coastal ecosystems. We are offering you the opportunity to contribute to the enrichment and promotion of the CROCO community code (Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity model, https://www.croco-ocean.org/ ), particularly in its ecological and biogeochemical dimensions. This code has just been accredited by the national institute for earth sciences (INSU) and is part if the French Littoral and Coastal Research Infrastructure (IR ILICO: https://www.ir-ilico.fr/?PagePrincipale ).You will be in charge of monitoring and developing biogeochemical codes dedicated to the integrated study of anthropogenic pressures on coastal ecosystems. The BLOOM code will initially be given priority, as it is already being coupled with the CROCO and MUSTANG models (https://croco-ocean.gitlabpages.inria.fr/croco_doc/model/model.modules.sediment_mustang.html ). You will be responsible for keeping these codes operational and portable. You will contribute to the publication of a detailed and didactic documentation, and to the training of new users. You will also be responsible for leading the national and international community involved in coupled physical-biological biogeochemical modeling in coastal environments. What will your activities be?

  • to maintain the state-of-the-art coupled physical/biological modelling codes developed in the laboratory (BLOOM module), with detailed and didactic online documentation,
  • to continue improving the coupling of biogeochemical codes with the community code CROCO, to enrich their diversity and propose innovations,
  • to contribute to the implementation of regional simulations of climate scenarios within structuring projects at Ifremer (e. g. PPR RIOMAR : https://riomar.lsce.ipsl.fr/, PPR MEDIATION : https://oceansconnectes.org/mediation),
  • to collaborate with DYNECO’s technicians, engineers and researchers Ifremer in general
  • (LOPS, HALGO, PHYTNESS, COAST) and its scientific partners (CNRS, Universities).

You will contribute to the coordination of the national and international community involved in coupled physical-biological biogeochemical modelling in coastal environments.Le profil recherchéWho are you?

  • Engineer (or PhD) in computer development and coupled numerical modelling
  • Extensive experience in programming and high-performance computing. Experience in modelling using the CROCO community code will be appreciated.

You have the following skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Optimization, debugging of algorithms and high-performance computing (parallelization: MPI, OpenMP, GPU, etc.)
  • Proficiency in several programming languages, including Python, R and Fortran
  • Advanced expertise in code version management tools such as Git and the GitLab forging software.
  • Mastery of coupled hydrodynamic/biological modeling tools, knowledge of biogeochemical and ecological models
  • Basic knowledge of biogeochemical (water column, sediment) and physical (tides, currents, waves) dynamics and their interactions in coastal environments.
  • Understanding of model analysis and parameterization (calibration, validation, stability and sensitivity studies).
  • Ability to integrate different scales of analysis and disciplinary approaches.

You have the following qualities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with specialists from different disciplines
  • Ability to develop research projects and obtain competitive funding.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in French and English.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate with academic, institutional and industrial partners.
