Job summary

We invite applications for an Education Manager in the Dyson School of Design Engineering. This is a senior administrative role that actively contributes to setting the direction and development of the Department’s teaching portfolio. The Department is delivering a growing and complex teaching programme.

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is a rapidly growing department that has consistently been awarded exceptional research and student experience ratings. In the most recent REF assessment (2021), Imperial College Engineering ranked first in the country, and our 2023 Office for Students National Student Survey (NSS) results confirmed our dedication to student success by outscoring sector rankings.

You will manage a team of three staff to ensure the provision of a professional teaching support structure within the department and the successful delivery of teaching administration across the whole student lifecycle. The role encompasses the programme management and growth of the taught programmes (MEng, MSc(s), MRes), oversight of quality assurance and information management, and further strategic development and planning.

Duties and responsibilities

The post holder will have overall responsibility for the undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate taught (PGT) administration and will oversee the operational management of the programmes within the Department of Design Engineering alongside the team of UG & PG administrators they:

  • Lead the administration operations for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes on a day-to-day basis to ensure the successful delivery of the programmes;
  • Effectively lead planning and implementation of strategies and processes to improve the daily operations of the programmes;
  • Provide leadership, management, support, feedback, and motivation to Teaching Office Staff. Ensuring effective delivery of tasks and fair distribution of work. Provide or oversee training to all permanent or fixed-term Teaching Office Staff. Ensure recruitment and smooth delivery in all job roles in the Teaching Office;
  • Line manage a team of (currently three) undergraduate and postgraduate taught administrators and liaise with course administration teams and other student services to ensure delivery of a consistent, high-quality service;
  • Oversight of the team’s administration in the admissions processes, placement administration, mitigating circumstances, pastoral care, production of materials, student surveys, course handbooks, and other devolved duties.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships internally and externally working with stakeholders to ensure services are aligned with priorities;

Essential requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent;
  • Hands-on experience in a similar or related role;
  • Line management experience;
  • Proven ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff;
  • Experience of Quality Assurance processes in HE;
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain administrative systems in order to ensure efficient and effective running of the School;
  • A high standard of numeracy, ability to interpret information and communicate it to staff and students;
  • Previous experience in timetabling and examination planning;
  • A high degree of understanding of student systems and Registry procedures;
  • Experience using web editing software, computerised timetabling packages, Blackboard;
  • Excellent organisational and management skills;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capability;
  • Experience with relevant IT systems, e.g. student management systems and VLEs;
  • Experience with data analysis and data management;
  • Knowledge of student recruitment processes;
  • Understanding of confidentiality and security policies;
  • Understanding of safeguarding policies;
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information with tact and discretion;
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a high volume and varied workload;
  • Ability to use initiative and work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed, while maintaining a high level of accuracy;
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills;
