We have an exciting opportunity for an Environment and Planning Adviser to join us and help
protect and enhance the environment through the way we design capital schemes and manage our
construction sites.
You’ll join a team of passionate people to help drive our sustainability journey and provide
the highest standards to our regulators and customers.
What you’ll do
You will provide support to the capital design and site construction teams to ensure
environmental best practice. You’ll take pride in influencing projects from feasibility right
through to commissioning.
Supporting our agreed rolling five-year programmes of work – all within the Wessex Water region
– our team spends the majority of their time working on projects and enjoy a good work/life
balance.
The team is based in Bath, but you will regularly visit sites to better inform the environment
and planning risks on our projects. However, long-distance travel and supporting fee proposals
are not a feature of this role.
Your responsibilities will include:
- supporting the construction of our flagship scheme at Avonmouth Water Recycling Centre,
where you will spend time each week, ensuring environmental mitigation and permits are
implemented and supporting site managers - helping to monitor and implement initiatives as part of Avonmouth’s sustainability strategy
- managing a portfolio of individual projects across the region from initial design through
to construction with a focus on our bioresources programme - influencing project outcomes and reducing our environmental programme and regulatory risks
throughout design and construction to achieve our targets around waste, carbon and biodiversity - assisting with securing environmental consents for the project programme, carrying out
external consultation and completing consent applications - preparing construction environmental management plans and providing ongoing construction
site support.
What you’ll need
Essential
- Relevant experience in a project delivery-focused planning/environmental role for
development/infrastructure projects (typically five years’ experience). - The ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
- The ability to build good relationships with internal teams, the Environment Agency,
councils and other stakeholders to develop approaches that deliver environmental protection and
risk mitigation. - Knowledge of UK environmental management and planning permission/legislation and guidance.
- Knowledge of environmental good practices during construction, including pollution
prevention planning and a general understanding of construction practices. - A high level of organisational skills and the ability to manage own projects, workload and
deadlines. - Good IT skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- A current driving licence, access to own transport and willingness to travel to site visits
and the Bath offices.
Preferred
- A degree in Environmental Science/Management, Planning or another similar related subject,
eg, Geography. - GIS skills.
- An awareness of ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems.
- Membership to a relevant professional institution, eg, IEMA, RTPI, CIWEM, etc.
- Knowledge of the water industry as well as an interest in sustainability.
- Good presentation, public speaking and problem-solving skills.
