for a Data and Evidence Officer to join our team in The Environmental Records Centre for
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) to maintain the smooth day-to-day running of ERCCIS
Data Searches and support its users and to lead our Wildlife Information Service, responding to

The Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) is hosted by
Cornwall Wildlife Trust and has 3 primary work areas:

  • Local Environmental Records Centre (LERC) for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (covering
    species and both marine and terrestrial habitats)
  • Providing the evidence, mapping (GIS) and data management function for Cornwall Wildlife
    Trust
  • Delivering relevant funded projects connected to environmental data gathering, management
    and interpretation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Main Responsibilities;

As a local environmental records centre one of the key services we provide is running data
searches for many audiences such as researchers, students, landowners, local recording groups
or those requesting data for commercial reasons, such as to support planning applications. We
offer this both through our ERCCIS data searches (EDS) software and run manual data searches
for specific requests. As Data and Evidence Officer (information services) you will help
maintain the smooth running of ERCCIS Data Searches and support its users as commercial
clients.

The other key part of this role is Wildlife Information Service (WIS). The Data and Evidence
Officer (information services) is a first point of contact for Cornwall Wildlife Trust (CWT)
for wildlife information and at many events.

WIS answers all enquiries on wildlife or policy for CWT and ERCCIS – specifically those that
require ecological information or skilled advice. Users of WIS (covering Cornwall and the Isles
of Scilly) include Trust staff, statutory Agencies (e.g. Cornwall Council, The Environment
Agency etc.), NGOs, Local Groups, the recording community, CWT members, landowners, members of
the public and others as required. Advocacy is a key element of the job, providing an efficient
and yet professional service that promotes the activities of ERCCIS and the Cornwall Wildlife
Trust to a wide audience.

Advocacy:

  • Responding to data requests
  • Responding to wildlife queries from a variety of sources
  • Be a point of contact as a wildlife expert at CWT.
  • Assist the People and Engagement team with fact-checking and other queries as required.

Communication:

  • You may be asked to help with Wild Cornwall magazine articles, social media content, and
    text for the calendar.
  • Compile and send out an ERCCIS newsletter
  • Submit figures to quarterly reports for Cornwall Council and CWT

Liaison:

  • Organise and attend a series of identification workshops throughout the year.
  • Regular support and liaison with biological recorders, data providers, Cornwall Wildlife
    Trust staff, volunteers and local groups.
  • Work to develop partnerships with existing and potential biological recorders

Management:

  • Recruit and manage volunteers as required.
  • Contribute to deputising for the ERCCIS Manager to cover annual leave and other periods of
    absence.
