Job description
Offer DescriptionProject Description:
Chronic wounds affect 4 million Europeans annually, with approximately 1% of individuals in highly developed countries experiencing this problem. Existing therapies are expensive and around 2-4% of European healthcare budget are allocated to wound treatment. Despite relative success in therapy, serious complications occur in approximately 10% of cases, rising to 30% in patients with diabetes or immunocompromised patients. It has been reported that in 10% to 20% of infected wounds Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is found that makes wound management even more challenging. Chronic, non-healing wounds often require prolonged hospitalization, multiple surgeries and can lead to leg amputation. Therefore, the ideal wound dressing should provide a complex treatment that counteract skin infections and promotes regeneration of tissue with impaired blood supply. The aim of AntiMicroMXen project is to develop a new generation of electrospun wound dressings made from polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLC) and gelatine, integrated with bacteriophages against S. aureus, antibacterial, hemostatic and reactive oxygen scavenging ability of MXenes and pro-regenerative factors derived from immortalized Human Adipose Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cell (HATMSC) cells. Regenerative factors produced by HATMSC cells, known as the secretome, have shown beneficial effects in wound healing. The secretome of this cell line exhibits strong pro-proliferative and pro-angiogenic activity. Moreover, a highly efficient method for producing these factors has been developed at IITD PAN.
